While showing off some of the new options available in multiplayer, Fernando Melo, a producer for Mass Effect: Andromeda, accidentally revealed on Twitter that players will be able to select a female Krogan as their playable character. This is a big change from earlier Mass Effect games, where players were restricted to males of the massive berserker species.

Following the news that BioWare cancelled the multiplayer beta test for their upcoming game, Melo took to Twitter to inform fans about what multiplayer would look like when Mass Effect: Andromeda launches on March 21. Gamers got a teaser screenshot of the multiplayer selection screen, where players will be able to choose from a combination of classes, kits, and races to build their avatar from.

To once again prove that it’s pretty much impossible to get anything past eagle-eyed fans, one Twitter user quickly noticed that among the options was a female Krogan, a first for the franchise.

It’s not that the Krogan were portrayed as a male-only race but rather that an endemic genophage specifically tried to curb the race’s population growth altogether. In the final game it’s a big deal when Commander Shepard happens upon a female Krogan, and making one playable in Andromeda is likely to draw plenty of excitement.

Up to now, multiplayer participants could only select male Krogans for online play. How this will affect the gameplay of Mass Effect: Andromeda is unknown, but it is a nice bit of extra choice that adds some freedom to the game.

Mass Effect 3 New Ending Krogan

Though Melo was reticent on the exact options available in Mass Effect: Andromeda’s multiplayer, other fans were able to piece together a few other tidbits with some help from the BioWare producer.

Apparently, players will be able to pick from a wide roster of characters/races, some of them rarer than others, and it seems the multiplayer will offer more choice than Mass Effect 3 did overall. The addition of the female Krogan pushes the possibilities even further when it comes to putting together an avatar, which should keep fans excited until March 21.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is set to release on March 21 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
