Mass Effect: Andromeda Gameplay Reveal Set for Next Month

First official gameplay footage from the highly anticipated Mass Effect: Andromeda will debut during The Game Awards, which streams live on December 1st.

Although BioWare’s N7 Day reveal for Mass Effect: Andromeda was fruitful as far as story and gameplay details were concerned, it was decidedly lacking in one key area. Out of all the footage and coverage that was shared around the Internet, there was no actual gameplay of Mass Effect: Andromeda in action.

Thankfully, BioWare has plans to change that early next month, when Mass Effect: Andromeda will have its official gameplay reveal during The Game Awards 2016. It’s unclear what exactly the developer has prepared for the event, but chances are BioWare will be bringing along at least a trailer.

The Mass Effect series is no stranger to the Game Awards (formerly the Spike Video Game Awards) stage, so it’s no surprise to see BioWare reserve something special for the event. Some may recall that the VGAs played host to the official reveal for Mass Effect 3, which was a major “get” at the time.

What’s more interesting to note about the Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay tease is that The Game Awards have a new focus on highlighting gameplay over pre-rendered trailers this year. Following the backlash over No Man’s Sky, which Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley feels slightly responsible for, the show has a new focus on giving viewers a taste of what each game will actually look and play like, rather than trying to sell them on an idea that may not pan out in two years. Granted, Mass Effect: Andromeda is only a few months from releasing – whereas No Man’s Sky was two years away when its trailer debuted – but still it’s exciting to know that what fans will see next month will represent the finished product.

And even though BioWare has not shown any actual gameplay footage from Mass Effect: Andromeda, the studio has talked at length about what players can expect. We know that biotic powers will be returning, and that players will have more freedom to play around with them. That’s because Mass Effect: Andromeda doesn't have a class system, and is instead giving players a series of progression trees that they can pursue in any order.

Loyalty missions and teammates will also make their return for the sequel, which is no real surprise to die hard fans. Both have become a part of the franchise’s DNA, so it would be surprising to see BioWare ditch that altogether. What is surprising, though, is that Mass Effect: Andromeda’s teammates will be free from harm, meaning there won’t be any major Kaiden/Ashley choices in the game.

But as they say, talk is cheap, and very soon BioWare’s talk of gameplay features and changes, like inspirations drawn from the ME3 multiplayer, will be replaced by live footage. The Game Awards streams live on December 1st at 6pm PST.

Mass Effect: Andromeda releases March 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
