In a new post on its official website, BioWare reveals a brand new companion for the Ryder twins to bring along during the events of Mass Effect Andromeda.

One of the major strengths of the Mass Effect franchise is the many unique personalities players come across throughout the journey. While the latest entry, Mass Effect: Andromeda, has yet to fully reveal many of the characters within the game, BioWare is slowly starting to pull the curtain back on a few companions characters. As fans continue to wait for more information, such as beta details and additional multiplayer gameplay, BioWare has released new information on a brand new character that the Ryder twins will be utilizing on their adventure.

Thanks to a new post on the official website, the latest member of the Andromeda Initiative is a female Turian known as Vetra Nyx. According to her backstory, she was born on the Turian home world of Palaven where her experiences growing up were less than ideal thanks to the presence of smugglers and mercenaries. This rough upbringing helped her become street smart, able to adapt to situations on the fly and making her an ideal teammate for Mass Effect: Andromeda players looking to have someone watch their back.

According to her profile, Nyx appears to fill the tank role, as she uses a cyclone assault rifle and wears heavily upgraded custom armor which provides additional shielding. Her favorite ability is Power Armor which essentially hardens and adds reinforced shielding. It's clear that Nyx will not only be able to dish out punishment, but take it as well, similar to the other popular Turian, Garrus Vakarian.

Interestingly enough, Turians appeared entirely as male in all three core Mass Effect games. The first female Turian character, Nyreen Kandros, was finally introduced into the franchise within the Omega downloadable content for Mass Effect 3, and then followed up in the Citadel content as well.

While BioWare cited a number of technical hurdles such as development time and sufficient memory as to why no female Turians appeared within the game, Art Director Derek Watts, gave a different answer in an interview. According to Watts, the team struggled with how to make females look visually different from the males, especially when trying to differentiate the faces.

Vetra Nyx joins the likes of Cora Harper, Liam Kosta, and Pelessaria "PeeBee" B’Sayle, as the only confirmed squad mates for now. Previous trailers have also shown off what appears to be Krogan and Salarian squad mates, however, so fans should expect to see plenty more before the game arrives in March. No word yet on that highly requested Elcor companion however.

What do you think of this new squad mate? Who else are you hoping to see as part of the team? Share your thoughts below in the comments.

Mass Effect: Andromeda launches on March 21, 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
