BioWare creative director, Mac Walters, offers additional details about Mass Effect: Andromeda, including character deaths, material gathering, and crew members.

One of the most anticipated titles coming in 2017 is Mass Effect: Andromeda, the next chapter in the highly praised Mass Effect universe. With the current year coming to a close, and many developers hard at work pushing their biggest releases of the year, developer BioWare is starting to whet the appetites of Mass Effect fans in preparation for the March 2017 release.

In addition to a new cinematic trailer, and information concerning Mass Effect: Andromeda’s place in the Mass Effect universe, creative director Mac Walters has provided a handful of new details about the game that is sure to get gamers excited.

In-Game Companions Can’t Die

In an interview with Game Informer, Walters discussed a few features that players can expect to see in Mass Effect: Andromeda. For starters, Walters revealed that companions in the game can’t die. This is an intriguing bit of information for Mass Effect fans, especially those who played the original trilogy. In the first Mass Effect game, players were given a choice between saving Ashley or Kaidan, a choice that really brought home the sense of consequence to actions and decisions in the game. Fortunately, players won’t have that kind of heart-wrenching experience in Mass Effect: Andromeda, though there will surely be many tough decisions to make in the game.

Mineral Scanning is Back but Different

One of the more dull, yet necessary aspects to previous Mass Effect games was scanning worlds for minerals and materials. The process was cumbersome and time consuming, and really needed to go.

Fortunately, while mineral and material gathering is back in Mass Effect: Andromeda, the process is “different from what you’ve seen before”, according to Walters. This time around, players will explore planets via the Nomad rover, which may mean things are going back to how they were in the first Mass Effect game, hopefully with a few tweaks for more enjoyment during the activities.

Players Can Customize Characters

It’s already known that the two main characters in Mass Effect: Andromeda are siblings. It’s now known, thanks to Walters, that no matter which sibling players choose, the whole family will be present in the game and will be customizable. This means players will be able to choose the ethnicity and background of each character in the game.

No Original Crew Members

Since the events of Mass Effect: Andromeda takes place 600 years after the conclusion of Mass Effect 2, any original crew members will be long dead. That means all crew members in the new game will be fresh faces.

That said, it is possible that Liara could still be alive and around. She was a mere 100 years old in the original trilogy and can live to be well over 1,000 years old. However, players won’t have a way to get to the Milky Way in Mass Effect: Andromeda, so if Liara is to make her way into the game, she’ll have to come to the players.
