'Black Swan' & 'Medal of Honor' Composers Working On 'Mass Effect 3'

EA Reveals Mass Effect 3 Composers

Mass Effect 3 is set to release early next year and as we already know, it's going to be bigger than its predecessors. Just how big, you ask? So big that there are a total of five composers working on the game's score.

Players can expect to hear the sounds of composer Clint Mansell - most recently known for Black Swan - in Mass Effect 3, but he will also be joined by many veteran Mass Effect composers, such as Christopher Lennertz, Cris Velasco, Sam Hulick (who also composed the exceptional soundtrack to Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad) and Sascha Dikiciyan.

EA did not specify whether all of these composers had a hand in the score for the game's single player, or whether some worked on multiplayer only, but either way it seems we can expect a wonderful musical accompaniment when the game launches in March.

Take a look at some of the composers accomplishments:

  • Clint Mansell, Golden Globe nominatedHollywood composer recognized for scoring celebrated films including Black Swan, The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream.
  • Christopher Lennertz, Emmy nominated Hollywood composer known for his work on the recent movie Horrible Bosses, also composed Mass Effect 2: Overlord, Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker, and won the Interactive Academy Award for Medal of Honor.
  • Cris Velasco, known for composing the God of War series’ score, has also worked on downloadable content Mass Effect 2: Kasumi and Mass Effect 2: Arrival.
  • Sam Hulick, veteran to the Mass Effect series having composed the score for Mass Effect, Mass Effect: Bring Down the Sky and Mass Effect 2.
  • Sascha Dikiciyan, video game industry veteran, known for composing the score for TRON: Evolution and the scores of Mass Effect 2: Kasumi and Mass Effect 2: Arrival.

BioWare has expressed how important the musical score is to the game, and I couldn't agree more. A good score can help deliver emotional impact during a scene, and this is certianly true of the Mass Effect franchise. Some of the most exhilarating moments were accompanied by equally intense music that just helped to make them that much more memorable. This should come in handy considering BioWare's emphasis on story telling.

“The magic of BioWare games has always been the emotional power of the story, so music is extremely important to the experience. With Mass Effect 3, we’re taking players on a more personal journey, even though the scope is bigger than ever — an all-out galactic war!  Each composer has played an intricate role in delivering the combination of epic scope and delicate emotion that will make Mass Effect 3 the best game in the series.”

The Mass Effect games have always had wonderful musical arrangements, so seeing that many of the franchises' previous composers are making a return for Mass Effect 3 is some pretty cool fan service, even if it might go unnoticed by many players.

Mass Effect 3 releases March 6, 2012, for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
