During the long process of creating a video game, sometimes developers decide to put in sneaky Easter eggs for players to find should they be extra lucky or particularly eagle-eyed. These secrets can reference older games of a particular series or nod to a certain piece of pop culture, such as the Ronald Raygun reference in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Nearly ten years after Mass Effect 3 first launched, a former BioWare developer decided to reveal an Easter egg he put in the game that he claims no one ever found.

The development team member's reveal comes on the heels of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition's release. A complete compilation of the Mass Effect trilogy including DLC and upgraded visuals and combat, the Legendary Edition has given series fans a chance to relive their days playing the sci-fi RPG and newcomers a foot in the door of an acclaimed RPG experience. The final game in the trilogy is Mass Effect 3, and although its original ending is the subject of much criticism, it was the first game of the series to introduce a multiplayer mode that allowed players to team up and fight enemy aliens.

Fans can now add a Mars-related Easter egg to the list of influences from Mass Effect 3, but only if they can figure out how to trigger the secret. Richard Boisvert, the former BioWare developer, recently took to Reddit to share the Easter egg he created which revolves around a little Mars rover. According to Boisvert, if players are able to navigate an array of solar panels following a precise path, a little rover will appear in front of the player and give them a congratulatory head nod.

Boisvert makes it easy for anyone looking to meet the little rover by including a picture of the path in his post. The little explorer apparently appears from behind some rocks and rolls up to the player with tiny solar panels above its head. Players who have now found the rover are curious about its inspiration, though it seems most think it was inspired by NASA's Mars Opportunity rover, which roamed the red planet from 2004 to 2018. With Mass Effect: Legendary Edition still fresh on gamers' minds, there's definitely an opportunity for many players to enjoy this Easter egg.

While fans looking to play through Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will probably be busy for a while, there's still excitement concerning the upcoming game in the series. Although Mass Effect: Andromeda's release in 2017 didn't meet the expectations many fans had for another entry in the sci-fi series, there's hope that the untitled Mass Effect 4 can avoid Andromeda's pitfalls and deliver a satisfying continuation of the original trilogy's vision.

Mass Effect 3 is included in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
