Yes, you read that headline correctly, and no, we haven’t been transported back to 2007. There have been reports of significant framerate drops in the PS3 version of Mass Effect 3.
The game is supposed to run at 30 frames per second, but Eurogamer is reporting that the title will drop to 20 FPS in multiple cases, including cutscenes and large combat sequences.
These framerate issues were also present in the PS3 demo, but unfortunately, it sounds like they’ve made their way to the retail version as well. Xbox 360 copies are also reported to experience dips in framerate, but not to the same extent as PS3 users.
PS3 users seem split on the issue, with some users noticing the problem and others who are completely oblivious – so it’s possible the framerate drop isn’t something easily discernible to the average user. Mass Effect 2 ran fine on the PS3 – though it certainly wasn’t perfect. As for Mass Effect 3, some players might be able to spot the differences between the performances of the two console versions – but dropped framerate could also go largely unnoticed.
It’s upsetting that these discrepancies between the two consoles still exist, especially considering the amount of parity between multiplatform games lately. It’s rare that a title will release on both consoles and feature large differences, especially a game published by EA. For those effected by the issue, let’s hope BioWare plans to release a patch – alongside one for the face import issue 360/PC users face.
