For many, Mass Effect 2 remains the best game in BioWare’s beloved sci-fi RPG series. While there are many things that come together to make it so popular, one of the highlights of Mass Effect 2 is undoubtedly the suicide mission that helps bring the game to a close.

Mass Effect 2’s suicide mission requires careful planning on the part of the player, as the lives of their beloved crew mates are on the line. The game’s finale sees players clashing with the Collectors, and Shepard is forced to make several choices that can result in characters living or dying. Not only does the mission reward players that grew close to their various crew mates, but it rewards those that pay attention to each character’s strengths and weaknesses. The mission's existence also explains why a fan would be tempted to create a crossover photo with The Suicide Squad.

Well timed considering that The Suicide Squad officially released yesterday, the meme from JimmyBoots90 shows the film’s yellow and red logo on the top half. On the bottom part of the image, the squad selection screen for Mass Effect 2 can be seen. With Task Force X often sent on missions that could result in their deaths, and the cast of Mass Effect 2 finding themselves in a similar predicament at the end of the game, the meme is as funny as it is appropriate. The Normandy’s crew is not constantly being threatened by Amanda Waller, however.

James Gunn’s take on The Suicide Squad brings the weirdness up a notch, with his group of characters being a true band of misfits. This is also fitting of Mass Effect, as the franchise offers a lineup of unique and unexpected companions. Seeing humans like Jacob and Miranda standing alongside a Krogan like Wrex is startling to anyone unfamiliar with Mass Effect, for example. Likewise, King Shark fighting with Peacemaker and Harley Quinn can be seen as equally strange.

Overall, Mass Effect fans seem to have enjoyed this meme, with it racking up over 900 upvotes and a few dozen comments thus far. Redditor deanykg also referenced the critically panned Suicide Squad movie that was released back in 2016, having Garrus Vakarian be the one to deliver the line that that name drops the movie's title. Other comments talked about their excitement for the new movie, while even more focused on just how much they loved the second game in the original Mass Effect trilogy.

With gamers making Mass Effect cross over with Fast and Furious recently, too, the player base is clearly having some fun with all the strange pairings. While The Suicide Squad may have a very different tone from what is seen in Shepard’s adventures, JimmyBoots90 found a way to make the combination work.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
