The most recent patch for the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 includes three new trophies which seems to indicate that some new DLC could be coming soon. The content pack is titled “Arrival” and may have something to do with the most recent Cerberus Network news update.
“Arrival”, which would mark the last DLC for Mass Effect 2, might bridge the gap between the second and third game. The Cerberus update was listed on the date of January 24, 2011 and is about a particular individual named Dr. Amanda Kenson who might have discovered something pertaining to the existence of the Reapers.
The news feed content does reward people who took the time to familiarize themselves with the Mass Effect universe via the various codex entries that are obtainable within the game which detail the various technologies and discoveries made by humanity during the discovery of the mass relays.
New Mass Effect 2 DLC has been confirmed for a a little while now, but the trophy leaks have provided some detail on what to expect from it. From reading the Cerberus entry, it seems reasonable to believe that the DLC will have something to do with Dr. Kenson confirming the existence of the Reapers and will give more credit to Shepard’s efforts to prepare the galaxy for the incoming threat.
“Historians and astronomers alike are abuzz tonight over a new paper published by Dr. Amanda Kenson of the University of Arcturus. Her team claims that by testing the dust trapped in the gravity wells around a mass relay, and comparing its composition to that of dust clouds in the same system, scientists can create a timeline of when the relay passed through the dust. Her conclusion? ‘Only a small fraction of the mass effect relays date back 50,000 years,’ she writes, ‘The majority are far older, indicating they were created by a species predating even the Protheans.’ Dr. Aurana T’Meles of the University of Serrice met the information with skepticism: ‘While Dr. Kenson’s methods appear sound, the Asari tried a similar procedure centuries ago and discounted it. What civilization could have spanned the galaxy for not thousands, but millions of years? If this were the case, we should have found mountains of evidence of their passing. Where is this species now?'”
The achievements/trophies also shed light into what to expect from the content and one in particular sounds grim.
- “The Ultimate Sacrifice” – Complete the Arrival DLC.
- “Last Stand” – Survive all five waves in the battle for Object Rho
- “Covert Action” – Rescue Dr. Amanda Kenson without attracting hostile attention.
So the “Arrival” DLC will be placing Commander Shepard in the role of rescuing Dr. Kenson from an unknown enemy, possibly someone who would rather not share her findings with the rest of the galaxy. Unfortunately, it looks like someone won’t be seeing the start of Mass Effect 3 and will sacrifice themselves for the greater good.
BioWare has been mum on details regarding the story of Mass Effect 3, the only thing known for sure is that an enemy force has invaded Earth and it’s Shepard’s job to rally the galaxy together in order to stop the threat.
What do you think Dr. Kenson discovered and what kind of implications will it have in the Mass Effect universe?
Mass Effect 3 will be releasing in 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
