Final 'Mass Effect 2' DLC 'Arrival' Launches March 29

Mass Effect 2 Arrival March 29 Release Date

The rumors were right. The final piece of Mass Effect 2 DLC -- Mass Effect: Arrival -- arrives March 29, 2011, on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It will include three new Achievements for the Xbox 360 and three new Trophies on the PS3. Arrival will set gamers back 560 MS Points on Xbox 360, £5.49 ($7) on PlayStation Network, or 560 BioWare Points on PC.

Mass Effect: Arrival will see gamers taking Commander Shepard to the edge of the galaxy to rescue an undercover operative who may have evidence of an imminent Reaper invasion that has been looming since the very beginning of the series. Admiral Hackett also returns and plays a prominent role in Arrival.

More content for a game like Mass Effect 2 -- a game that won numerous game of the year awards -- is almost always a good thing. Xbox 360 and PC owners have certainly been waiting patiently for Arrival to drop, and PS3 owners are probably just about done with everything there was to do in the PS3 release, and are ready for some additional DLC.

DLC for such story-rich games, however, must be a challenge for any developer. Not everyone that played Mass Effect 2 will play this DLC. Not everyone that will play Mass Effect 3 will play Arrival, either. Accordingly, BioWare must deliver a deep and rich enough story experience so that gamers who do download the content will be satisfied with the experience. At the same time, BioWare must be careful not leave players who choose not play Arrival in the dark, or to potentially discourage them from picking up Mass Effect 3 when it launches. BioWare has walked this line well in the past, and hopefully Arrival will continue to walk that delicate balance.
