Since the game released, the Marvel’s Spider-Man community has consistently shown just how dedicated it is, as fans continue to share art and photos regularly while also discussing potential features for the sequel. Some Marvel’s Spider-Man fans have even searched through the game’s code, with one group of modders recently stumbling upon a scrapped gadget.

In the official release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games provided players with eight different gadgets to use in combat. These included Peter’s basic Web Shooters, an Impact Web that pinned enemies to walls, a Spider-Drone that would assist in fights, and an Electric Web to stun enemies. Web Bombs and Trip Mines were also available, as was a Concussive Blast and the gravity-focused Suspension Matrix. However, there was seemingly a ninth gadget planned for the game that would have had a far different purpose.

The scrapped gadget is shown off by YouTuber ynSection, who credits the modders Spidey SansGoku, tiffsomniac, and JamesRack for discovering it. Working similarly to the sewer scene from the original Amazing Spider-Man movie, Peter is shown deploying a Web Line between two points. He can then zip onto this line and perch on top of it, with more lines able to be deployed by shooting at walls. While the design for the tool was clearly not finished, what Insomniac did complete is interesting to seen in action.

As for why this gadget did not feature in the original Marvel’s Spider-Man or its PS5 remaster, perhaps Insomniac left it out of the game for balancing purposes. After all, stealth would have been trivial with this gadget, as Peter could have performed perch takedowns on every enemy in an area with ease. Still, many commenters loved seeing a cut gadget in action, with some hoping it appears in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Considering that Miles Morales has camouflage that makes stealth easier, these Web Lines could even the playing field.

Alongside commenters suggesting that it would have been cool to see Peter being able to launch off these webs, as they could have made traversal more fun, many shared their excitement for the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man. Not only will more extensive mods be available to players, but cut content like this Web Line could possibly be restored. Using a gadget like this while wearing some community-made suits seems like a legitimate possibility, and it will be interesting to see if it happens.

With Insomniac Games seemingly being close to adding the Web Line to the original Marvel’s Spider-Man before deciding to leave it on the cutting room floor, it could be a shoo-in for the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. For now, though, all fans can see of the unreleased gadget is this brief footage.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is available now on PS4 and PS5. A PC version will be releasing on August 12.
