Marvel’s Spider-Man may not feature any scenes with Uncle Ben, which makes sense since its version of Peter Parker is several years into his career as a wallcrawler. However, players can still visit Ben’s grave, something that Marvel’s Spider-Man fans on PC were quick to capitalize on.
Any fans of the Spider-Man character will know how important Uncle Ben is to shaping who Peter Parker is as a person. Ben’s advice and tragic death push Spidey to be the hero he becomes, with most adaptations of the hero keeping Ben’s death as a focal point. However, as the internet has been known to do with sad scenes, Ben’s death has been memed by many. As such, as strange as it is to see a mod that lets players control Ben’s gravestone, it cannot truly be considered shocking.
The mod in question was created by Saphire and posted to Nexus Mods by a user named HomelanderSoldierBoy. For those looking to see the mod in action, a funny video was shared on Reddit by Reinerei. With nearly 3,000 upvotes and multiple awards given to the post, many fans clearly got a kick out of the offensive post, laughing at what is normally a sad part of Spider-Man’s lore.
The video in question has a memorable opening, as viewers come in to a shot of the sunset. The focus seems to be on a random pipe in New York City, but as the camera pans around to the front of said pipe, it becomes clear that there is a separate item resting on top. This is the gravestone for Uncle Ben, and it quickly begins to move like the friendly neighborhood hero. After freefalling from the top of a skyscraper to the streets below, the gravestone begins to swing around, with webbing randomly shooting out from the prop and onto nearby buildings and structures.
The gravestone then moves throughout Marvel’s Spider-Man’s open world, sliding across the city streets. Though seeing Uncle Ben’s grave in place of the classic Spidey suit would make for an interesting clip on its own, the video becomes truly hilarious due to the music that plays in the background. Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” is a good fit for Uncle Ben’s traversal through the city, but the use of the "Black Suit Theme" from Spider-Man 3 is even better. Playing early on, the dark music is a terrific way to hype up the dark joke of playing as Uncle Ben’s gravestone.
Though an Uncle Ben meme was to be expected with Marvel’s Spider-Man PC mods, something like a skeleton could have been used. The decision to go with a gravestone is even sillier, and with the mod available to download, anyone who is interested can become Uncle Ben.
