While Marvel’s Spider-Man had many strengths, one of its best aspects was the way it used Doctor Octopus. Perfectly voiced by William Salyers, players get to see Otto Octavius’ transformation from a kind and caring man striving to do good to a tentacle-wielding villain. His fall from grace is heartbreaking, especially with his motivation for turning evil being so understandable.

The final fight in Marvel’s Spider-Man, as well as the talk between Peter and Otto, makes it clear how much the former is hurt by the latter’s betrayal. Peter clearly looked up to his boss, caring for his mentor deeply. As such, assuming Insomniac Games does bring Doctor Octopus back eventually, it should consider a redemption arc. While Otto may have gone too far in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, Spider-Man: No Way Home does a great job of showing that Peter Parker will try to save everyone - something Insomniac should lean into with its sequel. Note: spoilers for Spider-Man No Way Home will be seen below.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Should See Peter Saving Doc Ock From Himself

If Doc Ock ever returns in a future Marvel’s Spider-Man game, a storyline that resembles Superior Spider-Man is certainly one route that Insomniac could take. However, while it would be fun to control Otto’s Spider-Man and wear his stylish costumes, there could be an even better story to tell in the form of his redemption.

Before Doc Ock’s villain turn, Peter Parker realizes that the chip that gives Otto control of his arms is malfunctioning in several ways. While he attempts to fix it, he is unable to do so in the time he has, with Otto refusing to acknowledge the risks that come with continued use of the arms. Peter does make it clear that they could have worked with time, though, meaning that it is possible he could have made a better chip that gave Otto control of the arms without the consequences of a ruined personality.

This is exactly what happened in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as Peter managed to craft a new chip for Doc Ock that helped the antagonist regain control over himself. After a brief scare, the Otto Octavius from the Sam Raimi trilogy wakes without voices in his head, having full control of his personality once again. As such, he is no longer a villain, something he proves when saving Spidey in the final act.

While Insomniac’s Doctor Octopus certainly goes further than the one in the Raimi films, and some may see his release of the Devil’s Breath virus as something that makes him irredeemable, it is important to realize he was not in control of himself at the time. Spider-Man: No Way Home is proof that even the most irredeemable villain can be saved, and that Peter will always try to help, as he goes out of his way to cure Green Goblin despite his cruelty.

With Peter being so close to fixing Doc Ock’s chip in Marvel’s Spider-Man after some last-minute testing, he surely could find a solution if he had the time to really work on one. Even if Insomniac’s Peter hates Doc Ock for what happened to Aunt May, he has always put the good of everyone above himself. As such, he could fix Doc Ock’s prosthetics, giving him working arms that do not alter his mood in any significant way. From there, Insomniac can decide how Doc Ock redeems himself, but no matter what it would be a great moment that shows Peter’s dedication to heroism.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is available now on PS4 and PS5.
