Sony's PlayStation Showcase 2021 gave fans a surprising first look at Marvel's Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games. With in-engine footage captured of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5, protagonists Peter Parker and Miles Morales were shown with stylish new suits before a brief but gratifying shot of Venom was offered through a dark alleyway.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may not be arriving until 2023, but fans at least now have a significant first look to whet their appetites and comprehend which enemies they may be up against. If nothing else, a fantastic showing of the game's visuals may be enough for fans to gush about until more news is shared. One fan in particular has taken a nostalgic look back at a previous Spider-Man title to demonstrate how much the graphics have improved for Spider-Man games since the year 2000.

Comparing images one on top of the other, psalmsofanerd contrasts Spider-Man and Venom between their PS1 and PS5 character iterations. Neversoft and Activision's Spider-Man featured polygonal character models whose hands and facial characteristics lacked the appropriate technology to have exceptional detail. Rather, what the PS1's Spider-Man lacks in detail, it makes up in eye-catching color. Colors in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 are more authentic in terms of graphical fidelity, and as a result they may not pop as distinctly as the colors used in Neversoft's Spider-Man.

Of course, each character design is a product of their time and technology. Spider-Man and Venom have both undergone a myriad of redesigns in countless numbers of media and properties, so it is certainly interesting to see the latest upcoming iteration compared to one from a game that launched 23 years ago. Venom is an energetic and talkative nemesis in Neversoft's Spider-Man who abducts Mary Jane Parker and harasses Spider-Man. It is currently uncertain what role Venom will contribute to Marvel's Spider-Man 2, however.

Venom's inclusion in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may not be unprecedented, as the symbiote and its importance had been teased in post-credits sequences for both Marvel's Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Most notably from the teaser is that Venom's voice talents will be achieved by horror icon Tony Todd, perhaps insinuating that the alien symbiote will have a lot of dialogue and a significant role in the narrative. Based on the brief snippet of his voice, he will sound just as intimidating as he looks.

The fan's contrasting images show that a great distinction between each iteration is apparent. Graphics, as well as particular art styles, have developed alongside modern technology. Marvel's Spider-Man 2's visuals are only plausible due to the generations of gaming consoles that have evolved since the original PlayStation. Even so, many fans herald Neversoft's Spider-Man as a seminal title for the wall-crawler and continue to celebrate its visuals.

Marvel's Spider-Man is scheduled to release in 2023 on PS5.
