With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 still set to release in 2023, and fans having nothing beyond the initial trailer to go off of, many are getting desperate for news. The franchise’s subreddit is full of silly posts that have replaced theories, features, and suit requests, with the community starting to resemble Elden Ring’s fan base back when info on that title was sparse. As such, it is no surprise that gamers were excited to see a big plot leak appear online, though they may want to avoid putting too much faith into it.

For starters, the leak comes from 4chan, a website known for being the home of fake rumors alongside a number of unsavory discussion topics. Beyond that, though, the leaked Marvel's Spider-Man 2 plot reads as something that could easily be thrown together by someone looking to do a bit of trolling. In some ways, it feels like a collection of fans’ hopes and dreams, though it is also full of inconsistencies and leaps in logic.

Why the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Plot Leak is Likely False

marvels spider man 2 developer asks for patience

The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 plot leak starts out believable enough, with Peter and Miles working together to track down Yuri Watanabe, Peter’s former ally on the police force who has since become a murderous vigilante. Considering how the City that Never Sleeps DLC set up Yuri to become Wraith, it would make sense for there to be some kind of payoff for that plot line in the sequel. While this is a reasonable enough first act, the other parts of the leak feel truly strange.

According to the anonymous poster, Harry will return seemingly unphased from his fake trip to Europe, re-entering Peter’s life and passing the Symbiote to him. Supposedly, the Symbiote will enter MJ’s purse before passing itself to Peter, who then gets his signature black suit. Supposedly, this leads to Norman Osborn wanting to kill Peter, as he fears his new abilities. However, this feels like the first leap in logic, as not only did Spider-Man save his life in the first game, but Norman was using the symbiote to heal Harry without much fear.

While this can perhaps be justified as Norman wanting to avoid another Mr. Negative scenario, his decision to then hire Kraven the Hunter to do the deed is an odd one, as there is little reason for the two characters to know each other. Beyond that, it sounds like Kraven is defeated rather easily, with Peter and Miles agreeing to remove the symbiote without any conflict whatsoever being mentioned. This feels strange, as Peter usually goes much further before willingly removing the suit. A conflict between the two seems likely, and something that major would surely come up in a plot outline.

The leak then takes a turn into absurd territory, as the symbiote somehow finds its way onto Eddie Brock - who will apparently be controllable in MJ-like gameplay sections. Considering that how divisive the non-Spider-Man levels were in the original game, with a mod even removing MJ and Miles levels completely, Eddie missions in a similar style seem unlikely. The leak suggests that black suit Spider-Man beats down Eddie at some point in the story too, which combined with a “bad history” would apparently explain why Eddie wants him dead. However, a collectible from the first game confirms Eddie and Peter had a good working relationship at the Daily Bugle, so this so-called “bad history” does not add up at all and would have to be a retcon.

The leak only gets worse with the description of the final act, with Kraven getting his head off by Venom because he mistakes him for Spider-Man and MJ being captured by Venom - and act that does not feel in-character for a monster and goes against Insomniac stopping its MJ from being a typical damsel in distress. For some reason, Norman then gaslights Harry - who was not mentioned in the leak after passing on the Symbiote until this point - into becoming Green Goblin to remove the Symbiote and fight the Spider-Men. This leads to a four-way battle, but apparently Harry and Venom have a change of heart and agree to help take Norman down.

All of this culminates in the most unrealistic part of the leak, which sees Insomniac’s Norman, who is not physically intimidating in any way, donning a stronger Goblin suit and battling the four characters on his own before eventually killing Harry. Considering how much effort Norman has gone through to save Harry, and how he is shown to be a genuinely loving father, the idea that he would kill him is frankly laughable - especially with no motivation provided. While there is always a chance that this leak is real and is simply a messy, poorly described version of the actual plot, Insomniac’s Eddie being retconned into hating Peter and Norman killing the son he worked so hard to save are the biggest red flags. With a predictable post-credits scene involving Spider-Gwen and the Spider-Verse mentioned, too, this feels more like fan fiction than an official plot leak.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to release in 2023 on PS5.
