As superhero games have evolved past simple movie tie-ins, their narratives have grown increasingly original - despite relying on source material for inspiration. This has proven to be a great way to pay tribute to a character's origins while formulating a new story for fans to enjoy, and games like the Batman: Arkham series have been particularly successful at leveraging their comic influences. With a slate of superhero games set to come out over the next couple of years, one game that has the potential to take on an exciting amount of comics is Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

The first entry in Insomniac's Spider-Man series did a lot of things right. Not only was gameplay satisfying across the board, the narrative could be considered one of the most entertaining Spider-Man stories in recent memory. Part of that success came from the game's inspirations, and with the direction Marvel's Spider-Man 2 seems to be taking with Venom and Kraven, there's even more room to touch on Spider-Man's source material. With all of that potential, there is one comic storyline Marvel's Spider-Man 2 should avoid.

Spider-Man's "One More Day" Storyline

Spider-Man One More Day Comic

Part of Spider-Man's popularity over the past few decades has been the consistent quality of his comic storylines. However, not every Spider-Man comic has been received well by fans. One such storyline that has remained controversial years after its publication is the "One More Day" arc.

In this story, Peter Parker is reckoning with the state of his life after revealing his identity during the "Civil War" event. Peter's Aunt May was attacked and is on the brink of death by the comic's start, and he goes through great lengths to try and save her life. All of them fail, and he is left desperate enough to seek help from the demon Mephisto. In order to save Aunt May, Mephisto requests Peter and Mary Jane sacrifice their marriage, which they eventually agree to. All wishes were granted by the story's end, but many fans and critics detested the decision to split up one of Marvel's sacred couples.

How "One More Day" Could Ruin Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has gotten one brief trailer, but it already seems to set up what could be a satisfying experience. In order to keep that momentum going, avoiding a story that is at all similar to "One More Day" would be for the best. Although it would be difficult to replicate it considering Aunt May is already dead, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could put Mary Jane and Peter's relationship in similar jeopardy. Not only would some fans be immediately turned off by any connection to the controversial comic, it would undo all of the work that the first game did to show how Peter and Mary Jane trying to salvage their relationship.

It is somewhat premature to speculate on the specific story details of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but it's hard to doubt how risky it would be to use a storyline like "One More Day" as inspiration. Insomniac has proven it can create a compelling world out of Spider-Man lore, and there are more popular comics to use if it must rely on source material. With how much hype is already built up around the sequel, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will have to perform a careful balancing act of meeting fan expectations while providing a fresh experience.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is currently in development for the PS5.
