Superhero games have become especially successful in recent years thanks to the Arkham series and the newer Marvel's Spider-Man series. With Marvel's Spider-Man 2 already confirmed, fans are hoping that the game is not an exact copy of the first two in the series. Developer Insomniac Games should add certain tweaks to the gameplay to make it more enjoyable, and one area that it will need to focus on is combat.

The first two games in the Spider-Man series have provided players the chance to experience combat and technology from both the perspectives of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, each of whom have different styles. Combat mechanics have been one of the stars of the series thanks to its Arkham-like gameplay that requires timed reversals and lethal combos. However, in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, this will need to be refined to give players the unique experience promised by leading PS5 studio Insomniac.

Balancing Two Spider-Man Styles

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has revealed that players will be able to control both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they take on numerous villains from the duo's rogues' gallery. Fans of the series wonder if switching between the two Spider-Men will be seamless, allowing for lethal double attacks; or slower, similar to GTA 5’s character switching.

Insomniac should attempt to let seamless gameplay shine in its upcoming game, as this would make fighting larger crowds of criminals more enjoyable. It would also require the developer to restructure its current combat mechanics and give players more refined gameplay. The way it currently stands, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales require players to balance between attacking and dodging, with more focus on quickly attacking and chaining together combos. However, this makes the gameplay easier as Spider-Man is capable of staggering almost every enemy with a single hit to facilitate said combos.

To fix this, the game should focus more on Spider-Man’s athleticism rather than his strength. Letting players concentrate on the defensive aspect, possibly by relying more on gadgets, would make the game remain true to Spider-Man rather than just having players battle through crowds in a show of raw strength.

Spider-Man 2 Needs More Enemy Variety

Spider-Man’s combat system has been a highlight of the previous two games, yet many players found it to be somewhat repetitive. Having around five or six types of enemies in Marvel's Spider-Man, each having one main method to defeat them, is great the first time around but can get stale quickly upon replays.

For players to enjoy the combat in the upcoming game, especially when there are two playable Spider-Man characters, there must be more depth in the enemies. Including more variants within its basic enemy types could elevate combat in the game. It would require players to not only understand the type of enemy they are fighting, but also force them to sprinkle in more variety for their combat style.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is already one of the most anticipated games of 2023 following the success of the first two games, especially after its teaser trailer released. With both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in the game, as well as the possibility of playing as Venom, players will be able to experience unique mechanics and should be allowed to transition between each character at whim during a fight. This, along with more variety in enemies and a focus on defensive counter-attacking moves, would be more of a challenge and could greatly improve the overall experience.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will release in 2023 for PS5.
