The latest character to receive an in-depth lore dive and gameplay showcase for Marvel’s Midnight Suns is Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, who has been kept fairly under wraps since her subtle announcement. Having been revealed alongside Spider-Man, it is unsurprising that Scarlet Witch may have been overlooked while the infinitely beloved and popular wall-crawler stood out to fans. But her place in Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ narrative seems much more foundational, and her gameplay is truly intriguing.

In Marvel’s Midnight Suns, fans have already learned that Scarlet Witch will be featured as an antagonist, as well as a late-game playable character. This dichotomy will be exciting to learn about when the game eventually releases. In the meantime, Scarlet Witch now has an exclusive gameplay presentation that demonstrates why investing in her, even at a late stage in the game, may be worthwhile as she uses mystical sorcery to turn enemies on each other and supply support abilities in distinct areas of effect.

Scarlet Witch’s Positioning is Paramount in Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Scarlet Witch seems either effective or ineffective solely based on where she is placed in an arena. It does not seem as though Scarlet Witch has any cards with Taunt effects, but she benefits the most anyway when she is completely surrounded by enemies and other party members. Players may want to consider this when selecting her for their team, and as YouTuber Christopher Odd states she may best be paired with Marvel’s Midnight Suns party members capable of dealing high damage to a single target. Once in the thick of enemies, Scarlet Witch can truly thrive.

Scarlet Witch’s “Wrong Place, Wrong Time” passive ability, for example, offers a percentage chance to “apply a negative status effect” to a random enemy near her each turn. After upgrading this passive ability in Midnight Suns' Abbey, it will then debuff each enemy that is near Scarlet Witch. Thus, if players can keep her near particularly powerful enemies or numerous enemies each turn, her passive ability will have that much more of an effect. One of Scarlet Witch’s unique abilities can then take advantage of her positioning and cause enemies to attack one another.

In this regard she is fairly straightforward; other cards are seen in the player’s hand during her Marvel’s Midnight Suns gameplay showcase that seem to have other attacks or abilities, but this showcase in particular centers on her unique assets. The damage Scarlet Witch can achieve in Marvel’s Midnight Suns is less of her own accord in terms of card-based attacks and more due to her ability to have enemies attack each other instead.

Her positioning continues to be instrumental with her Chaos Reigns heroic card, where enemies within a selected area will attack each other. On upgrade, there is a 50% chance that each enemy will attack one another twice, and the addition of a redraw mechanic will recover some of Scarlet Witch’s health.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Scarlet Witch is a Support AoE Character

Scarlet Witch’s AoEs are only as effective as her positioning allows them to be, and once again she must always be amidst as many enemies as possible for an optimal effect. It is unclear how many defensive properties she has, and therefore players may need to fill their three-character Marvel’s Midnight Suns party with heroes who can defend her or deflect aggro away from her.

That said, just because a character is positioned around enemies does not necessarily mean that they will be targeted based on their proximity to them. It is important to remember that Scarlet Witch wants to be around enemies, but not necessarily targeted by them like other characters might want to be for their abilities to trigger in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Likewise, players will want Scarlet Witch near allies as well for them to benefit from her supportive abilities. For example, Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Field skill card grants one Resist to all allies near her for two turns.

Upon upgrade, this card will recover health for those in the AoE as well, and can even gain one Counter on redraw. Further, Scarlet Witch’s Unleashed skill card increases the AoE radius of her abilities by a certain amount for two turns, and is stackable for an even wider AoE potential that could make her cards truly powerful.

Scarlet Witch Has a Self-Sacrifice Ability in Marvel’s Midnight Suns

In a compelling turn of events, Scarlet Witch’s unique gold card in Marvel’s Midnight Suns creates a surprising effect that players will have to strongly consider before casting it recklessly. Scarlet Witch’s No More heroic card consumes all her health to damage each enemy in her AoE, dealing one damage for every point of health she currently has. This Exhausts upon use, and it also downs her since it depletes her health entirely. This heroic card may be particularly useful if players are on their last leg with other characters near death as well, as it could be the final blow they need to clear the battlefield and secure a win.

But if used in the middle of a combat mission, players are sacrificing one of their characters for a potentially high-damage card. Of course, as mentioned briefly before, players may have combat items they brought into a Marvel’s Midnight Suns combat mission that could revive her, thus giving themselves a huge amount of damage dealt without the irreversible sacrifice of one of their characters.

Scarlet Witch could feasibly be revived afterward at no penalty, so it seems fairly overpowered if players approach Marvel’s Midnight Suns cleverly in preparation. Upgrading No More will draw a card on each KO and also allow players to redraw it instead to apply Cure to Scarlet Witch. Again, Scarlet Witch’s AoEs become absolutely fundamental at this point, and if players had stacked Unleashed beforehand they can deal that massive amount of damage in a much greater AoE as a result.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
