The marketing for Marvel’s Midnight Suns is winding down gradually with its last couple of character breakdowns. Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ gameplay breakdowns have been prefaced by lore for each Marvel character, giving fans a bit of a closer look at X-Men members and Avengers alike before fans are introduced to them in-game. Gameplay breakdowns have been a great way to help players become familiar with these characters and how they might approach them in gameplay, especially when each character has their own featured showcase to demonstrate how attack, skill, and heroic cards all work, but they haven't introduced worthy new faces like Rogue.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ twelve playable characters will be accompanied by a final, thirteenth character that is only unlocked after beating the game. Indeed, Marvel’s Midnight Suns includes many Easter eggs and references to unannounced Marvel characters, any of which could end up being the final character. But since the base-game character roster is apparent to all fans, it is interesting to look at other Marvel characters who failed to make the cut. If Marvel’s Midnight Suns added another X-Men character, for example, Rogue would have been an excellent addition.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Characters All Offer Unique Gameplay Mechanics

Considering the unique abilities that Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ playable characters have, some are more robust and dynamic than others. Captain America, for example, uses Taunt and Block mechanics to sustain damage, but he may also ricochet his vibranium shield at multiple enemies.

Blade, meanwhile, is able to Bleed enemies for gradual damage per turn, and Wolverine can self-revive as a representation of his rapid cellular regeneration. These are fantastic characters to include because they add something diverse to Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ gameplay, which will consequently make players think more critically when building a party for a mission. This is the best case scenario that Firaxis and 2K could ask for, since the game would be dull if two or three characters seemed overpowered or if each characters' skillset overlapped.

If the choice for which characters to keep in one’s party is difficult, then it means other characters joining the roster are dynamic or interesting enough to warrant them in the player’s three-character Marvel’s Midnight Suns team. Still, while the game’s characters all have something diverse to offer, X-Men’s Rogue would have been fascinating to see in combination with other Marvel characters.

Rogue’s Mutant Ability Could Make Marvel’s Midnight Suns Cards Her Own

Rogue’s mutant power allows her to absorb other characters’ abilities and use them as her own. This is achieved through simple skin-to-skin contact, and even though some Marvel’s Midnight Suns characters are covered head-to-toe in a costume, it would be an invaluable mechanic. Rogue's cards could introduce a mechanic where she touches the nearest character companion and borrows their ability. This could result in the cards drawn for Spider-Man, for example, to be playable for both Spider-Man and Rogue.

The effect could last for a few turns at most to make sure it is not overpowered by allowing characters to double-up on one character’s cards infinitely. Rogue could then move to another character, absorb their power, and use their cards. Depending on which characters players brought into their party alongside Rogue, interesting strategies could be devised in accordance with the other card-battler mechanics Marvel’s Midnight Suns has to offer. It is therefore a shame that Rogue is not part of the game’s base roster, but there is still a chance that she could be revealed as Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ final unlockable character.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches December 2 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions coming later.
