Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has been one of the biggest surprises of the year; with its E3 2021 announcement going down as one of the largest reveals of the entire event and, now that it's officially been released, fans have been exploring the game's world and experiencing the story that the Guardians laid out for them. While the game has been pretty well received, there are some clear areas of improvement that have been pointed out by players. From some gripes with the combat to some lackluster, rigid animations in certain sections, but the game does feel like it missed the mark in one important way: Its age rating.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has a T-rating, meaning that its tone is really similar to its MCU counterparts in terms of the maturity levels that it can take its story and dialogue. However, it feels like the game could have really benefitted from an M-rating. That's not to say that it should have been a dark and gritty take on the Guardians, as that doesn't necessarily fit the characters' comic book origins. However, there are some aspects that could have been handled better without the restrictions of keeping things relatively clean.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy's Constant "Flarking" Around

As many fans noticed in the early parts of the game, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy isn't afraid of using crass language. Peter Quill and company are essentially just space pirates, so it makes sense for them to curse and swear like regular people. That isn't always the case, however, as many of the more graphic swear words are replaced with made-up sci-fi equivalents that are completely inoffensive at best, and completely cringe-worthy and weird at worst.

This wouldn't be a huge issue if characters said "flark" instead of the more dubious "f-word" from time to time, but certain characters like Rocket are constantly saying it, and every time they do it's completely weird. While there's a lot for players to suspend their disbelief in-game, for whatever reason, a loud-mouthed, crass raccoon saying "flark" every other sentence is just a bit too far, and it feels much more out of place than if he were to simply be allowed to use the earthly equivalent. Of course, this would be a problem for release, as it would mean that the game would be given an M-rating, but the cringe-worthy swear word replacement just doesn't do the game any favors.

Allowing the characters to get a bit crasser with their language would likely help the game's tone, as well as it could help elevate some funny moments into being laugh-out-loud funny. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has already committed to making some of its characters crass and rude, so going the extra mile to actually make them a little more filthy would do a lot for its characters and help set the tone, instead of relying on "flark" to convince players that someone is a pottymouth.

Setting Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Apart From the MCU

If Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy were to be allowed to get more mature, it would definitely stand out from the MCU which has to stick to the regulations of the PG-13 rating, the movie equivalent to rated T. Guardians doesn't need to be some deep exploration of mature themes, but if the game was permitted to take things further than the films, then it could further stand out and have a much more solidified identity of its own in the eyes of the players.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
