Marvel has played its cards right and ensured the audience doesn’t forget about their biggest franchise with the end of Avengers: Endgame, as the company will be releasing Avengers in 2020 in what is sure to be a blockbuster release.

We already saw one attempt at this in 2012, but the new game definitely seems like it's going to take the world by storm. With this in mind, it’s natural to make our predictions over which villains we might be seeing in Avengers. However, we don’t believe every antagonist from the comics should be added in, so we’ve compiled a list of 5 villains we do want to see and 5 we hope aren’t in the game.

10 Need: Ultron

Ultron’s appearance in the second Avengers film left a bad taste in some fans' mouths, which was doubly disappointing since this was his first exposure to a mainstream audience. Now that this very audience is expected to buy the Avengers video game, it’s the best shot at righting previous wrongs.

Ultron’s role should be as one of the supporting villains who pops up without the Avengers being aware of him. This would make him the perfect secondary antagonist before the real one is revealed, thereby making Ultron’s role meaty enough to stand out and not be bogged down by the burden of being the main villain.

9 Don't Need: Red Skull

Since we know thus far that the game will be dealing with the apparent death of Captain America, it seems obvious that the Red Skull might be used as the villain behind this. However, that really would be too easy of an angle, one that would make people yawn in boredom rather than be entertained.

The Red Skull wouldn’t go well when put against the rest of the Avengers either, and it would take a whole lot of de-powering characters like Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk for Red Skull to look like a credible villain.

8 Need: Loki

Whenever Loki is involved in any form of Marvel medium things are simply magic. He rules in comic books, animated shows, and is easily the most popular other than Thor in the latter’s film series.

Since Thor would need some sort of hook to keep him interesting among individuals who really are very weak compared to him, Loki would present an excellent foil for the God of Thunder. It doesn’t even matter that this angle has been seen before, since Loki is an antagonist who captures interest easily with his charm.

7 Don't Need: Evil Captain America

There’s a big chance Captain America might resurface as a brainwashed version of himself in the game, seeing as this was one of the most well-known storylines he had in the comic book chronology.

And yet, seeing him in this light won’t be appropriate for what is the first true mainstream outing for the Avengers in gaming. There should instead be a different, unrelated reason for Captain America’s disappearance, and he should only return as a symbol of hope rather than antagonism.

6 Need: The Mandarin

Like the case was with Ultron, the Mandarin was done wrong by the MCU as well. The character is expected to arrive in full within a TV series in the future, but audiences should be shown what he is capable of earlier using this game.

Plus, Iron Man is currently considered only as a hero who easily overcomes the odds since fans haven’t seen a real threat for him; since The Mandarin is Iron Man’s archnemesis, this should make for a great dynamic within the game as we’ll see the Mandarin push just the right buttons to antagonize Iron Man.

5 Don't Need: The Winter Soldier

We’ve already gotten enough assassins to go around in the landscape of video gaming, and the Winter Soldier won’t be bringing anything new to the table if he shows up. He’s mainly a villain for Captain America, who could be shown as having been taken out by the Winter Soldier, but that would be way too heavy of a story for a team-up video game.

For this reason, it’s better to keep this character away for the time being as Avengers needs to firmly feel as an ensemble offering with only a few close connections to villains. The Winter Soldier’s inclusion would make the story way too much about Captain America.

4 Need: The Leader

Those of us who are a little older remember very clearly the Leader, who was an antagonist in a Hulk game way back in the early-2000s. That game hasn’t aged well, but the idea of the Leader is still cool.

He can easily go up against other superheroes like Iron Man and still be engaging, and the Leader’s inclusion would mean the children of today will know just how diverse Hulk’s villains really are from the comics. If nothing else, who wouldn’t want to smash this guy around just by looking at that evil grin on his face?

3 Don't Need: Yellowjacket

Yellowjacket

Hank Pym is included in Avengers, which means Ant-Man’s inclusion can be considered a given. However, this is one superhero who works the best in smaller quantities. Bringing in Yellowjacket would mean the game would have to cut away to give Ant-Man importance, which doesn’t work well for pacing reasons.

Yellowjacket just isn’t the kind of villain you want to go up against, not when there’s already a list of cooler villains we can choose from who also have deeper connections with the core Avengers.

2 Need: Doctor Doom

marvels avengers villains

If there’s one thing that'll get us excited - other than perhaps this game being announced as an open-world feature - it's a grand reveal of the villain as Doctor Doom. It’s high time for Doom to appear in mainstream as the powerhouse he truly is, and what better way than having the player try and take him out with all the Avengers by their side?

Doctor Doom can easily beat each one of the Avengers that could face him, and his presence is such that he would easily win over those unaware of his greatness. We can already imagine how epic it would be to have Doom as the final boss fight.

1 Don't Need: Thanos

For the better part of the decade, Thanos has been touted as the ultimate Big Bad in Marvel, and we think it’s time his presence is quietly taken down. Avengers: Endgame already had enough of Thanos for everyone to know of him, and the video game fanbase doesn’t need Marvel to pile this on more.

Since we’re hoping Doctor Doom turns out to be the main antagonist of Avengers, it would make zero sense if Thanos also joins in on the storyline. In any case, Thanos’s inclusion would take the story to cosmic levels, when what we want is a more grounded story based on Earth.
