So far Marvel's Avengers has been host to 3 free character expansions since its launch in September 2020: Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, and Black Panther. Most have been met with a tepid response from fans, save for the Black Panther update War for Wakanda, as that saw the most enthusiasm from players. Following in the footsteps of his fellow Avengers, Spider-Man comes to Marvel's Avengers this November 30th exclusively on PS4 and PS5. The catch: his expansion contains no traditional story missions.

Having more in similiarity to a character being added to a fighting game roster or hero-shooter roster, Spider-Man's expansion is not titled with the "Operation" moniker but instead is being labeled as a "Hero Event." Outside of one short set-up cutscene that introduces Spidey to the Avengers, the rest of the expansion's "story" is told through audio files that are mainly emails and text messages being read aloud. Avengers' Gameplay Director Philippe Therien's reasoning behind Spider-Man's implementation is essentially so players on non-Sony consoles do not feel left out on important story beats and that the team at Crystal Dynamics instead put most of its focus into the Klaw raid that will be releasing the same day for all players.

For those curious about how Spider-Man controls; Spider-Man swings from a glass ceiling of sorts with a web that doesn't really attach to anything. This of course is difficult to implement any differently to ensure he stays within the confines of Marvel's Avengers established gameplay but it may disappoint some fans. Spider-Man plays similarly to the more nimble Black Panther and houses 3 heroic abilities. Web-Bomb is an area-of-effect damage move, the Spider-Drone is an AI companion that fires webs at foes which can be instructed to follow the player or roam a specific area of the battlefield, and finally Spider-Man's ultimate ability, the Wrecking Ball. This ultimate is essentially a giant ball of webs that hits the ground and creates a huge amount of splash damage.

Spider-Man is being voiced by Sean Chiplock who some may know as the voice of Revali from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but unfortunately is not given much to do besides random voice lines and minimal cutscene appearances. The Spider-Man expansion also comes with a plethora of outfits (40 in total) ranging from every color scheme imaginable to favorites such as the Spider-Noir suit.

Having been such a long-time coming for fans of Marvel's Avengers it will not doubt be disappointing to fans that Sony's exclusive character isn't getting the same fanfare as other DLC characters. However, for fans on other hardware, it is encouraging to know they won't be missing out on much.

Spider-Man comes to Marvel's Avengers exclusively on PS4 and PS5 on November 30, 2021.
