Marvel’s Avengers is hot off its release of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor. But without a narrative thread of challenges and missions for players to embark on with another one of Marvel’s Avengers’ DLC Operations, players may have already experienced Jane’s gameplay and moved on if her playstyle was not favorable to them.

Indeed, though Jane is her own character with her own plethora of mechanics and abilities, she is ultimately an echo character of Thor Odinson. Recently, Twitter user @MeepleOfBritain expressed to Crystal Dynamics Design Lead Brian Waggoner their hopes for a new character. While they would like to see Marvel’s Avengers’ interpretation of War Machine, MeepleOfBritain also hopes that Marvel’s Avengers will soon introduce “a new style of character.” Waggoner has since responded plainly, giving fans a clear idea of what to look forward to in Marvel’s Avengers’ near future.

Waggoner simply replied by saying, “Next hero is new” with a smiley emoji. This officially and maybe surprisingly confirms that the next character Crystal Dynamics is working on has a unique playstyle apart from other characters and would not be representative as an echo character imitating another established character on the roster. MeepleofBritain points out the fact that Marvel’s Avengers already has two echo characters now in Kate Bishop and Jane Foster, and thus Waggoner’s confirmation of the next character being new interestingly narrows down whom they may be.

Echo characters are obviously not identical reskins of another character, but their inherent similarities are too comparable, and therefore may not require Crystal Dynamics to build a character and their playstyle from scratch. War Machine, for example, would be an echo character since Crystal Dynamics could reasonably develop him from the framework of Iron Man’s own gameplay, which also implies that he will not be added next.

It was also rumored for a long time that She-Hulk could make her entrance into Marvel’s Avengers at some point, but Waggoner’s statement confirms it will not be anytime soon. Rather, Captain Marvel seems to be the most likely candidate for a character who would have their own unique playstyle and not have gameplay that could be associated with any other character currently on the roster.

Carol Danvers is already an established character in Marvel’s Avengers with a design fleshed out, so it is honestly strange that she has not been added to the roster sooner. There is currently no indication that Captain Marvel specifically will be the next character introduced to Marvel’s Avengers, but she is now a strong contender among the potential characters that fans may indeed see next.

Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
