Marvel's Avengers has slowly been revealing more and more details about the playable characters each week, with it now being the "Hero Week" for the God of Thunder, Thor. Following a new look at Thor's design change after long-running criticisms, developer Crystal Dynamics has also unveiled some new gameplay for the ground- and aerial-combatant.

Before moving forward, it's worth mentioning that this is new gameplay of Thor to the majority of the world, but for those who were able to attend the Marvel's Avengers E3 showcase or watched one of the various leaks before they were taken down, it's not. Needless to say, because of this, the Thor gameplay doesn't feature a look at his new character design, but it does give players a look at his abilities, including the use of the Odinforce.

The Thor gameplay trailer stops short of naming and/or fully explaining his character abilities, but Crystal Dynamics does describe his combat style and showcase a variety of tactics. Mjolnir enables the God of Thunder to ceaselessly move from aerial to ground combat, while also giving Thor the most powerful ranged attacked in Marvel's Avengers. Players can use Mjolnir to lock an opponent in place, allowing themselves and others to focus on crowds or deal massive damage to the trapped target.

The Odinforce, which may prove to be any one of Thor's heroic abilities, allows players to stop enemies in the tracks, produced a shield of lightning, or electrify any of the God of Thunder's attacks. Considering how many of Marvel's Avengers character abilities have been revealed, the Odinforce seems to be the most flexible in terms of what it can do. Timing it well seems key to its effectiveness, but it also seems like a fun mechanic regardless.

It's unique mechanics like this that will make the 4-player co-op Warzones so much fun. Using what makes each character distinct from each other will be what determines the success of this mode, but if nothing else, Marvel's Avengers Warzones could take some notes from Destiny 2 raids.

Marvel's Avengers releases May 15, 2020 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
