Upon Marvel's Avengers' original announcement at E3, many viewers thought at first that it would be a relatively straight forward action game. In the months since, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have slowly elaborated, further detailing how Marvel's Avengers stands out from other game experiences. This weekend Marvel's Avengers is being shown off at NYCC, where more information about the game is leading to further clarity regarding just what it is. Interestingly, it's sounding more and more like a Diablo-esque ARPG.

Speaking to BleedingCool, several details about Marvel's Avengers were revealed or elaborated on based on information previously announced details. One great example is how Marvel's Avengers previously confirmed that each individual Avengers like Thor would need to be leveled independently. New details confirm that the level cap in Marvel's Avengers will apparently be 10. So every Avenger in Marvel's Avengers can be leveled from 1-10.

The next bit of new information deals with gear in Marvel's Avengers. Players will be able to equip gear not unlike ARPGs or say Destiny. It's quite limited, however, as each Avenger will only have four equipment slots. Gear in Marvel's Avengers will, like in an ARPG or MMO, have different rarities. These rarities have now been confirmed to be Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and something described as "a little above legendary."

Perhaps the most interesting reveal of all, tying Marvel's Avengers even closer to the ARPG genre, is the confirmation that it will have set items. Set items, for those unfamiliar, are literal sets of items that when worn together provide a unique bonus. If a single set item drops, it becomes a unique quest in its own way, because players will want to pursue the rest of the set. And once the set is completed, it offers a unique and powerful reward for taking the time. It adds loot depth to Marvel's Avengers' endgame.

More and more becomes clear about Marvel's Avengers' gameplay and progression systems with every month. Coming out of E3, Crystal Dynamics has made it obvious that it wants fans to know and understand more about the game. And, to its credit, Marvel's Avengers does sound more and more exciting with every new detail. Between a robust single-player story featuring a number of Avengers, a cooperative multiplayer mission system, and the progression and customization options available to each Avenger, Marvel's Avengers is standing out.

Marvel's Avengers releases May 15, 2020 on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
