While Marvel’s Avengers fans have been given several reasons to be optimistic about the coming year, there is still no shortage of areas that can be improved upon. One Marvel’s Avengers player believes that one of the biggest areas that can be fixed up is gear, suggesting that the DC fighting game Injustice 2 should be looked at for inspiration.

Marvel’s Avengers’ gear problem has been discussed heavily by fans in the months since release. While the actual items are useful and extremely diverse in their abilities and boosts to certain areas, they are all the same visually. With a skin-based system for cosmetics, no cosmetic items change the appearance of a piece of gear. If players swap out Cap’s shield or Iron Man’s arc reactor, there will be no visual difference whatsoever, as only the statistics are changed. Injustice 2, on the other hand, is the opposite.

Not only do Injustice 2’s gear mechanics ensure that players could buff certain stats and make different variants of their heroes, but each piece of armor has a different style. Whether it be belts, pouches, logos, or larger clothing items, players can mix and match pieces of different armor sets to create unique looks for their DC heroes. According to Redditor WolverineKuzuri, having a system like this in place could help “the community thrive on Avengers fashion posts alone.” The fan then shares a mockup of different looks that would be possible if such a system existed.

Using the recently added hero Hawkeye as an example, eight slightly different outfit variants can be seen. The top four outfits show Hawkeye in his Classic armor set, with each sporting a different headpiece. The Ultimate skin’s mask, sunglasses, Classic helmet, and default face all add a bit of variety to a design that would normally be static. For the bottom skins, the new Iconic body armor is seen, while the same head items are copied and pasted to the new armor type — instantly creating four more variants.

While the fan does suggest that such a mechanic would likely have to be saved for a potential sequel, it is hard not to think of how much this subtle difference could help. If players know a certain gear piece will impact the design of their Marvel’s Avengers heroes in a certain way, they may be more inclined to grind for specific gear types. As of now, stats are the only thing that matters, with customization being limited to proper skins such as Maestro Hulk.

With so much hype around Marvel’s Avengers’ upcoming MCU skins, clearly, the game’s fan base does care a good bit about cosmetics and customization options. As such, seeing a gear system like Injustice 2’s could give a major boost to the popularity of the struggling co-op game.

Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
