Square Enix had plenty to show during its E3 2019 conference, but it saved some of its biggest hitters for last. One of these was the Marvel's Avengers project, which finally got a release date. In addition to iconic heroes Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and the Hulk, it was teased that at least one more hero would make an appearance: The original Ant-Man, Hank Pym.

The trailer only briefly teases Hank at the end of the presentation, following all the other heroes' much longer and more elaborate reveals. The time is spent wisely, though, as the character quickly makes use of the tech that he's known for. After an enemy drops in through one of several portals opening up, Hank uses his shrinking abilities - via a sort of energy cannon - to deal with a threat that even has Tony Stark on edge.

During the Square Enix E3 presentation, it was explained that the Avengers look different than viewers might expect in this rendition. Rather than basing the characters' appearances directly off of the comics or films, this rendition is Crystal Dynamics' take on The Avengers. As such, it appears that in their version of the timeline, Hank is still young and in the testing phase of using his technology. However, it remains to be seen if any of his other characteristics carry over from the comics, which portray a fairly different person than the older Hank Pym of the recent Marvel film adaptation.

It also remains to be seen if Hank Pym will be playable in the base game or not. However, Square Enix was forthcoming with the audience, explaining that Marvel's Avengers heroes DLC will be free, so if Hank doesn't get his time in the sun with the base game, he'll likely be added later on as a playable character. Players will also have to wait and see him actually don the Ant-Man suit, as the sole cutscene with his character gives the impression that his technological developments haven't reached that level just yet.

Marvel's Avengers releases on May 15th, 2020 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia.
