One of the bigger reveals at E3 2019 was from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics who finally pulled the curtain back on Marvel's Avengers. Fans got a ton of information including the voice actors involved with the project like Troy Baker and Nolan North, story details, cinematic trailers, and even the reveal that new heroes and other DLC will be added for free. One thing that wasn't shown was actual gameplay, which some fans have managed to capture and leak online following a closed door session.
Unfortunately, the footage posted to YouTube has already been removed, but some Redditors have managed to download and repost the trailer. While the 12 minute video itself is pretty rough, it does give fans a better look at how Marvel's Avengers actually plays. The third-person action game, taking place during the A-Day celebration, looks to be fairly linear switching between the five different heroes who each have their own fighting style and abilities. Naturally, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America appear to be the heavy-hitting bruisers, while Iron Man is adept at both ground and air attacks, and Black Widow focuses more on quick-hitting, acrobatic-style attacks.
Not only that, the footage has managed to confirm a number of new characters as well. The E3 demo confirms the existence of the skull-masked villain Taskmaster, who players fight 1 on 1 using Black Widow which also includes a small quick-time event segment. Although never seen, the character Nick Fury is also mentioned numerous times, a fact that makes sense considering that one of the trailers showed what appears to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier being shot down into the San Francisco harbor.
While the demo never gave a great look at how co-op or character customization actually works, Crystal Dynamics has been pretty open about its goals for having up to 4 players join together. During its E3 Coliseum panel, developers at the studio shed a few interesting details including that since each hero is designed to have a unique play style, co-op players won't be able to pick the same character. Players can jump in and out of co-op and it wouldn't be locked specifically to story progress. For those who just want to get together and level up some characters, it appears that Marvel's Avengers will let them do just that.
Marvel’s Avengers releases May 15, 2020 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
