Marvel’s Avengers has an exciting few months of content planned, with fans finally having access to a roadmap that details what is coming next. The heavily requested MCU skins will be joining the game, as will a new Patrol mission type centered around the Wasteland area from Future Imperfect. A Cosmic Cube Villain Sector is also on the way, with a major Black Panther expansion called War for Wakanda arriving in the back half of 2021. Before all this, though, a special Red Room Takeover event will be added to the game.

Themed around the hero Black Widow and her relationship with fellow spy Yelena Belova, this special event will see a fresh story told via a limited time HARM room. While this is exciting enough on its own, what makes the Red Room Takeover worthy of more hype is the fact that it is the very first event to come to Marvel’s Avengers. As such, the floodgates are now open, and more limited time content will hopefully follow as a result. With the game having an entire comic book canon to play around with, there is no shortage of possible themed events that could be added to the game going forward.

An Axis Event

Perhaps the easiest event for Marvel’s Avengers to pull off at the moment would be the Axis storyline. Taking place back in 2014, the crossover saw a spell cast that turned several members of The Avengers villainous. It also turned typically evil characters to the side of good, with Doctor Doom and Magneto ultimately being the characters that saved the day and turned everyone back to normal. The highlight of the event was Superior Iron Man, a twisted version of the hero that ran his own group of Avengers called The Axis of Evil. Enslaving those who opposed him while extorting money from his supporters, this take on the character was memorable.

With Marvel’s Avengers adding a Superior Iron Man skin to the game this week, a big piece of the puzzle is already in place for a special Axis event. Players could enjoy a limited time mission that sees them taking down some evil Avengers, with a battle taking place between the good and bad Avengers. Other villain skins could be used to make the event feel more impactful, with the Maestro Hulk costume, Ronin Hawkeye outfit, and Hydra Cap design all joining Superior Iron Man to form a full faction. Seeing a boss rush against the Axis of Evil would be lots of fun, and while the fights would essentially be recycled content, it would still be a clever way to reuse assets.

A Civil War Event

Few comic events have matched up to the hype of the original Civil War, nor the impact of its events. Featuring important moments like Spider-Man publicly unmasking and a Captain America death fakeout that lasted for an incredibly long time, the event saw Iron Man and Cap clashing in a brutal final battle — with dozens of heroes and villains on each side of the fight. While the magnitude of Civil War may mean that it would be best for the event to be saved for when more members of the Marvel’s Avengers’ DLC roster have been added, it does fit with the current narrative of the game perfectly.

After all, the general public hates The Avengers due to their failure during A Day, something that fits perfectly with the Registration Act from the comics. While some adjustments would surely be needed, much like with the MCU’s Sokovia Accords, an adaptation is possible. Similar to the Wasteland Patrol mode, a brand-new style of gameplay could be added during this event, as Marvel’s Avengers could add PvP gameplay for the first time. While some matchmaking systems would need to be in place so this remained fair, such an addition would draw a lot of attention to the game — helping greatly with its rebuild.

A Secret Invasion Event

Yet another great event that could be added to Marvel’s Avengers would be a re-telling of the Secret Invasion storyline. A popular comics event for its many twists and galaxy-wide impact, the plot of Skrulls secretly taking positions of power would be simple enough to incorporate into Crystal Dynamics' universe. While it is unlikely that the Skrulls will replace an actual member of the Avengers roster, it is possible that smaller characters like Maria Hill can be revealed as one of the aliens. Skrull-based comic designs for each of the heroes already exist, and players could expect to see the characters in their usual looks with some pointy ears and green skin.

Beyond some new cosmetics and story, the event could introduce the Skrulls into the game. Aside from having different designs and fighting styles that help them to stand out from the AIM bots that players usually fight, Crystal Dynamics could be clever with how they use the faction. Old missions could see Skrulls inserted as random events, with a random AIM bot transforming into a Super Skrull during the event’s runtime. Adding the special enemies into older content to make it feel fresh, the Skrulls could be used like the Bloody Harvest or Revenge of the Cartels enemies from Borderlands 3.

A Marvel Zombies Event

Finally, if Marvel’s Avengers takes on seasonal events, bringing Marvel Zombies to life during the Halloween period seems like a no-brainer. There are several ways to go about doing this, though taking notes from the Red Room Takeover event would be a good way to start. With the upcoming event set to transform the HARM room into the area where Black Widow was trained, another special HARM room could appear during Halloween and allow players to fight zombified superheroes and villains. Yet another way to bring gameplay diversity, Marvel’s Avengers fans could be forced to hold out against fast-paced hordes. An infection mechanic could see gamers turning against their team if exposed, and like other survival-based zombie games, players could be tasked with surviving for as long as possible.

Another possibility would be to pull from Future Imperfect and its use of time travel. With The Avengers still having access to the technology, they could go to an alternate future where the zombie have taken over. Much like in the comics, only a few characters may have survived, with players able to explore a re-designed version of the Wasteland destroyed by the undead instead of the Kree. The event could see players completing objectives for SHIELD, the Inhumans, and even AIM in hopes that a cure can be found. Missions could see The Avengers rescuing civilians from Zombies and conducting experiments on the creatures to help with the research for someone like Hank Pym.

As for cosmetics, Marvel comics has once again provided a perfect foundation to build from, as just about every superhero has a zombified design. With Marvel’s Avengers’ cosmetic rework likely to be finished by the time this event would become a reality, players could earn skins in-game while buying others from the marketplace. Decking out a full lineup of Avengers in ripped clothing, rotten skin, and other gruesome design details would be a blast. Like the other event possibilities, it could be comprised mainly of assets that are already in the game, with Crystal Dynamics simply needing to be clever about how they use them. While War for Wakanda may be the game’s next chance, killing the time between expansions via more Red Room-like events would be a stellar strategy.

Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
