When Marvel’s What If was first announced, it looked like a fun offshoot to the MCU. Now that it's complete, it seems like the cartoon is going to have a greater impact than what fans were expecting. What If's first season is now done. Will a second season come out and address new characters or will it continue to spotlight Captain America, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Thor, Iron Man, and so on?

Since this new cycle in the MCU is all about the multiverse, fans can expect there to be some big impacts in the upcoming films including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home particularly. Wouldn’t it be wild if those live-action films became animated for a few scenes? The possibilities are endless but for now, let’s rank the nine episodes of Marvel's What If. There will be spoilers.

9 What If... Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark

Killmonger from Marvel’s What If

"What If... Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark" is like the same story of Black Panther but tweaked. Killmonger saves Tony Stark thus preventing Iron Man from being created. It seems like he is a different character at first but he still seeks revenge on Wakanda for what happened with his father.

It might have been more interesting to see Killmonger turn out differently instead of remaining a bloodthirsty soldier. No lessons can be learned here.

8 What If... Ultron Won

Ultron from Marvel’s What If

“What If... Ultron Won” takes place on an Earth where Ultron defeated the Avengers and most of humanity. It seems like Natasha and Clint are the only two left alive. Their search for a cure to this robotic disease is interesting as is the end of the episode.

While a big game-changer for the series, overall this episode is just okay, albeit one that sets up the future nicely. The sequel episode would not be nearly as good without this one so that’s something.

7 What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger

Captain Carter from Marvel’s What If

“What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger" is a good introduction to the show. The events play out almost the same in terms of beats. Agent Carter becomes the Super Soldier instead of Steve. However, Steve gets his own powers via an early Iron Man-like suit via Mr. Stark.

Rogers is called the Hydra Stomper. They still follow plotlines from the first Captain America movie involving Hydra and all that. There are twists along the way but not enough to make it truly feel like a wild deviation from the main film series. It still has some good fights though.

6 What If... The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes

Nick Fury from Marvel’s What If

"What If... the World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes" is a very dark episode but one with an interesting payoff. Every Avenger is offed right before they were supposed to join the team. The episode features iconic scenes from the solo movies to set up some cool twists. Who is killing all of these heroes and why?

Without revealing anything, the climax should come as a big shock to the movie fans out there. There is a hopeful end as well even though seeing the core Avengers die is brutal.

5 What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath

The Watcher from Marvel’s What If

"What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath" is a continuation of the Ultron episode. The Watcher summons various heroes from this short series together in order to form a new multi-dimensional team known as the Guardians of the Multiverse. This includes Dr. Stranger, Captain Carter, T'Challa, Thor, Killmonger, and oddly enough Gamora.

They band together in order to defeat Ultron with the series’ best fight scenes collectively. It can also be funny as party Thor is the show-stealer. As interesting stories go, this episode is in the middle of the pack.

4 What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord

T'Challa from Marvel’s What If

"What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord" is exactly as it sounds. The Ravagers mistakenly pick up T'Challa in Wakanda thinking that he is Peter. They’re wrong but they still raise him all the same. T'Challa is a natural-born leader like he is in Black Panther. Everyone seems to love and respect him.

Even Thanos bows before the great prince. One of the best running jokes in the episode falls back to Thanos defending his plan of random genocide which sounds grim, but it works. It’s an overall fun episode that takes advantage of the alternate reality premise.

3 What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands

Dr. Strange from Marvel’s What If

The title, “What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands" references Christine, Dr. Strange’s beloved. He still gets in a car crash but Christine loses her life. No matter how hard he tries, Dr. Strange cannot save her from the eternal fate of dying in every conceivable way.

This tears him in two, creating a mad version of himself who is obsessed with power. It honestly feels like the plot a sequel film could dive into and less like something far off the beaten path. That's a big compliment.

2 What If... Zombies

Zombie Captain America from Marvel’s What If

"What If... Zombies" takes a page from one of the most iconic and gruesome spinoff comics in Marvel history. The episode starts with Bruce beaming back to Earth after escaping Thanos’ ship. When he tries to warn everyone about the invasion, Bruce discovers the world is filled with zombies. Not just any zombies either: these ones are smart and still have their superpowers.

Eventually, Bruce is rescued and it’s a race against time to find refuge and a cure. It’s not as dark or bloody as it could have been but the premise is solid enough. It could have honestly been longer. Peter’s remarks on movies were the highlight.

1 What If... Thor Were an Only Child

Thor from Marvel’s What If

"What If... Thor Were an Only Child" is an amazing concept for an episode. Loki was never raised by Odin so Thor was an only child, which caused him to be raised into a typical frat party guy. Like the zombie episode, Thor’s stint on Earth is like an infection.

Thor spreads his party around the world. The only one who can stop him seems to be Captain Marvel but there is another woman mightier than those two combined: Thor’s mom. It’s a fun riff on the '80s and '90s party college films.
