As the famed god of thunder, Thor has built up quite the reputation in comics, film, and real-life depictions as the Norse god. Despite the tenure of Chris Hemsworth’s role in the Marvel Studios franchise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is still much to be explored in the weird and wonderful world of Thor Odinson.

Thor has a lot of powers. Some, bolster his strength, and some are outright weird. The comics are a huge part of Thor’s identity, and the big screen could use some of Thor’s attributes for the next Marvel movie to feature the god of thunder.

8 Incredible Thirst

Trying to outdrink Thor is a deadly task. The god of thunder’s thirst seems nigh on unstoppable. Thor can happily drink kegs of mead and wine without even feeling the slightest bit tipsy. It’s a power many would adore if it means skipping the dreaded hangover the next day.

This power isn’t exactly a defining feature of Thor’s abilities, but it shows his warrior’s spirit by drinking with friends and allies of war. Thor even shared a barrel or two with himself from the future in Thor: God of Thunder, in which the two ventured off in search of Gorr the God Butcher. This villain was given the live-action treatment in Thor: Love and Thunder.

7 The Odinforce

An ultimate and mystical power. The Odinforce is a power given to the Kings of Asgard. As Odin is the first king, it befits his name. When Odin dies, Thor is given the Odinforce and receives near infinite and formidable powers to bestow to lesser beings.

The Odinforce allows Thor to teleport, fire energy blasts, and other great abilities. His strength increases greatly but uses the power too much, and the user falls into a deep sleep to recharge the power. This is why sometimes audiences see Odin in “Odinsleep”, as it drains the user severely.

6 God Blast

Every powered hero seems to have a godly ability to expel energy. Even Superman from DC Comics received a similar power a few years ago. This allowed Superman to expel the power of the sun in a solar blast. The God Blast acts similarly and requires Thor’s strengths.

Thor needs Mjolnir specifically for this ability, as it is used as the catalyst for such a power. Mjolnir combines with Thor’s life force to create a cosmic force that taps into the very power within Thor’s being. It’s entirely dangerous, as it has the power to kill immortals and other such gods. Thor effectively used it against Galactus, to quell his hunger, and make him flee.

5 Secret Identity

When Odin banished Thor in the comics, he was forced to live out his life on Earth, also known as Midgard. This dispel of power made Thor lose his memories of Asgard, and retain the identity of a medical student called Donald Blake.

After Donald Blake came into contact with Mjolnir, which was disguised as a walking stick, he transformed into the mighty god of thunder, Thor. For years, Thor would swap between Blake and Thor, as a classic secret identity trope. Eventually, Thor would leave behind the Blake alter-ego, and return to Asgard as the true god of thunder.

4 Speaker Of All-Tongue

Considering Thor spends a great deal of his infinite time traveling to different planets, he must come across many different languages. Thor is an Asgardian god and the protector of the Nine Realms. It’s no secret that not everyone in the universe would speak English. That’s where the All-Tongue comes in.

Thanks to the All-Tongue, Thor can speak any language at all. It gives him the power to understand and talk, in the native language of whoever he is speaking to. This is great for other languages and helps Thor effortlessly speak to other people that are not from Asgard.

3 Cosmic Pyrokinesis

Despite the weird name, it gets weirder. This more recent power under Thor’s arsenal came with the retcon of his origin. The Phoenix Force sought a new host on Earth, in which the ancient heroes battled for the privilege. Here, Thor discovered that his mother was not Frigga, but instead the Phoenix.

This knowledge unlocked an ability within Thor. Cosmic Pyrokinesis. It allowed Thor to build up energy to create cosmic flames, that were similar to that of the Phoenix, and then to expel said generated energy into a weapon similar to that of lightning. Its cosmic power can be frighteningly devastating.

2 Godly Longevity

A power that many may wish to have. Being a god means living nigh on infinite. Although gods can die of old age, they are centuries, if not eons, away from such an event. Thor looks youthful, despite being over 1,500 years old. His time alive made him one of the very first heroic characters since the age of heroes had not begun yet.

The comics have seen old Thor, which has a beard, long white hair, and a grumpy attitude. This is far off into Thor’s future, and something that the MCU might explore at a later date. Thanks to godhood, Thor can keep youthful, and live for a very long time.

1 Warrior Madness

There should be no question on who is the most mighty, or the most powerful Avenger when Thor activates Warrior Madness. This power is great for overwhelming odds, in which Thor needs to use all of his strength.

This power gives Thor a temporary increase in strength and stamina, but at the cost of his sanity. Thor will enter a blind state of berserker rage, in which everyone in his path, friend or foe, is an enemy that can be attacked and destroyed.
