At the Capcom Cup, Capcom reveals the very first look at Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's gameplay, including a look at the game's new 'Infinity Stone' system.

One of the most exciting (albeit, least surprising) reveals during the PlayStation Experience 2016 opening show was of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Its debut cinematic featured Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Mega-Man and Street Fighter's most well-known character, Ryu, in an impressive battle.

But it wasn't until much later, at the Capcom Cup, until fans got their first taste of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite gameplay. In the new trailer, which offers just a minute of actual gameplay footage, the same Marvel and Capcom characters face-off in a 2v2 battle. This is quite unlike the series' previous entries, in which 3v3 battles were the custom, but fans have mostly welcomed the change.

The action-packed trailer shows how Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite players can thread combos together seamlessly and bring their partner into the battle with ease. Fans can also see Ryu deliver some devastating strikes to Iron Man's chest, Iron Man blasts Mega-Man with his own chest laser, while Captain Marvel preps Mega-Man before he gets hit with a huge gun set up by Iron Man.

The trailer also offers a look at the Infinity Stone system as Ryu unleashes a mighty hadouken as his 'Power' Infinity Stone attack and Captain Marvel gets him right back with her 'Time' Infinity Stone ability. Players will be able to equip different Infinity Stones before a match, granting themselves different abilities and effects. Unfortunately, Capcom has yet to explain all of the differences between these powers and what the benefits and drawbacks of them are, but with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite not having a release date other than 'sometime in 2017,' there is plenty of time for the Infinity Stone system to be detailed in full.

There's also plenty of time to deliver on fans' hopes regarding the game's character roster. While some popular picks from the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite character wishlist include Daredevil, Black Widow, and M. Bison, whether these will actually feature in the game or not is a mystery at this point. Capcom has promised a "diverse roster of fan favorite characters" from both the Marvel and Capcom universes and pre-announcement rumors suggested that the game would feature many characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but fans are being left guessing for now.

In addition to character roster questions, many fans want to know more about Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's story mode. The game's narrative will feature a "timeless struggle," and a war against "powerful forces" and a "new villain." It all sounds good so far but players will need more than that in order to be fully sold and fully convinced that Infinite's story mode won't let them down as Street Fighter 5's did. More information will come all in good time, though, so fans should just sit tight for now.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2017.
