You want more Marvel vs. Capcom 3 characters? You got more Marvel vs. Capcom 3 characters. Coinciding with all the big technology announcements of CES, Capcom has now confirmed two more characters for their highly anticipated fighting game.

Popular Marvel character Phoenix and Final Fight's Mike Haggar are the two newest combatants that will be joining the MvC arena. Though they were both included as part of a leaked complete list of characters, these tangible trailers make their existence in the game feel much more concrete. Being new characters to the franchise, both Phoenix and Haggar have a lot of work to do in order to win over die-hard fighting game fans, but for fans of video games and comic books they should be very welcome.

Final Fight’s Mike Haggar, as his video game habitat would suggest, is a much more brawler-based character. As more of a close-combat fighter, Mike deals most of his pain via punches, grapples, and lead pipe hits. For the fighting game player who likes to round out their team with a ranged, mid, and close quarters trio, Haggar fits the close quarters bill nicely. What Haggar lacks in ranged attacks, he more than makes up for in damage.

Obviously the flashier of the two, Phoenix is a well equipped mid range combatant that has some very powerful close quarters moves, but also packs enough ranged attacks to keep boundary huggers at bay. With moves based off of Phoenix’s ability to create and control fire, there is definitely going to be a venerable visual feast whenever Phoenix is on screen. Haggar’s moves might not do much to show off the new Marvel vs. Capcom 3D engine, but Phoenix’s more than make up for it.

While it’s certainly going to be difficult to get gamers away from their gold standards like Spider-Man and Wolverine, the newer Marvel vs. Capcom player might find some qualities they like in Phoenix and Mike Haggar. Their popularity might not fall into the upper echelon of Marvel or Capcom’s lexicon, but there should be some gamers out there who are familiar with one or both of them (Phoenix moreso than Haggar). Gamers need only wait a mere month before they will be able to give each and every character a test drive, so study all of the previously released character trailers well — training begins soon.

Anybody out there plan on using either Mike Haggar or Phoenix as part of their Marvel vs. Capcom 3 team? Which of the two looks to be the stronger fighter?

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds releases February 15, 2011, for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
