The Game Awards 2018 promised surprise world premieres, and it lived up to that promise right off the bat. At The Game Awards, Marvel Entertainment revealed Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, a Nintendo Switch exclusive and the first original entry in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series in a decade.

In Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, players can take control of a variety of Marvel heroes, from the Guardians of the Galaxy to the X-Men to the Avengers, as they all come together to stop the Mad Titan Thanos and his deadly group known as the Black Order from getting their hands on the Infinity Stones.

Check out the first trailer for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order below.

As can be seen in the trailer, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order will feature similar gameplay to its predecessors; it's a Diablo-style action-RPG with a focus on co-op. And also like past Ultimate Alliance games, players will be able to play co-op online as well as locally, with up to four players on a single console.

While Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 looks to be a largely familiar experience to fans of the Ultimate Alliance franchise, that doesn't mean it doesn't have any new ideas. Along with the traditional camera perspective, it also features a new "heroic view" that offers a closer look at the action. This perspective will be available for Ultimate Alliance 3 players who are playing through the game together using multiple Switch consoles.

More details on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is expected to come in 2019. However, from the trailer released at The Game Awards, it's already clear that the game will boast a rather expansive roster. Along with the expected Marvel mainstays, some lesser-known characters can be spotted in the lineup as well, including the Inhumans' Lockjaw. Next year, fans should be able to look forward to more details on Ultimate Alliance 3, which will likely include even more new character reveals.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order will launch in 2019, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
