The February 2023 season of Marvel Snap adds the iconic recurring villain MODOK to its roster as the featured Season Pass card. In a collaboration with Marvel's upcoming movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, this season will feature the two titular heroes alongside this fearsome foe. Additionally, Marvel Snap is adding Kang the Conquerer, Ghost, Stature, and The Living Tribunal for players to collect from Pool 5, but it's MODOK who stands out as the addition with the potential to dominate the meta in the coming season.

MODOK, also known as the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, made his Marvel Comics debut in Tales of Suspense #93-94 in 1967 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. George Tarleton becomes MODOK after being mutated by the criminal organization known as AIM into an advanced human-supercomputer hybrid. He becomes a recurring villain for Captain America, but has also done battle with foes like Namor the Sub-Mariner and Doctor Doom, as well as Kazar and the Hulk in the Savage Land. With a history like this, Marvel Snap players can expect MODOK to be a force to be reckoned with.

Marvel Snap's Meta Tends to Revolve Around Season Pass Cards

The past few seasons have seen pay-to-win cards dominate Marvel Snap's meta with Season Pass cards like Zabu and the Silver Surfer being the cornerstone of many of the most popular decks. While the trend is somewhat concerning given developer Second Dinner's previous commitment to avoiding pay-to-win monetization, it at least gives players an expectation for what's to come with each new season. With this in mind, it's very likely MODOK being the Season Pass card this season will result in a high usage rate among players and a shift in the meta as a result.

MODOK is a 5-Cost/8-Power card which already makes it quite the powerhouse, however, its real value comes from the On Reveal ability to discard the player's entire hand. While this seems like an adverse effect that runs counterintuitive to most strategies, in the right deck it can be incredibly useful. Marvel Snap's Discard Aggro Deck archetype greatly benefits from this ability as its goal is to take full advantage of cards that benefit from being discarded themselves, as well as cards that benefit from other cards being discarded.

Likely partners for MODOK in Marvel Snap are cards like Apocalypse, who returns to the player's hand with +4 Power when discarded, or Wolverine, whose newly updated ability plays the card at a random location with +2 Power whenever it's discarded or destroyed. Another great strategy would be to play MODOK while Morbius is on the field, so it can gain +2 Power for each card discarded by MODOK's ability. A Hela Marvel Snap combo with MODOK would be quite strong if she's played the following turn with her ability to bring back all discarded cards to random locations, although this tactic would require some luck in order for the player to draw Hela on turn 6 and not before.

Countering MODOK may prove difficult for players facing off against decks featuring the new card as there is no ability in the game to directly stop opponents from discarding cards. The best way to stop MODOK's On Reveal ability in Marvel Snap from happening is to predict where an opponent will play it and set up Cosmo there to prevent On Reveal abilities from happening at that location, but this strategy requires a bit of luck. What will make MODOK decks so unpredictable this season is reliance on luck for both players, hoping opponents don't draw the cards they need or discard important cards like Hela before they are able to play them.
