Marvel is two for two in the world of streaming as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finished its first season leaving behind a trail of exciting new characters for the MCU to pick up. Although it may be hard to measure the show’s success, it looks like Disney is ready to back up its new Captain America with a new movie.

Despite Steve Rogers handing the mythical shield over to Sam Wilson in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios decided to turn the new Cap’s journey into a more conflicted affair in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The series capped off Sam and Bucky’s characters arcs in spectacular fashion, but it does raise the question of what is next for the two heroes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it would appear that Marvel Studios has already lined up The Falcon and the Winter Soldier writer Malcolm Spellman to handle the next Captain America film, which would star Anthony Mackie in his newfound job. Regardless of rumors suggesting the possibility that Chris Evans could return to the MCU in some capacity, which have been readily denied by Marvel chief Kevin Feige, the new movie would be ready to embrace Sam Wilson as its Cap.

Little else is known about this project for now, aside from Spellman likely bringing in the series’ episode five writer Dalan Musson. Another huge detail of interest for fans would be whether Captain America 4 would fit in as Phase Four movie, or if it’s something planned further down the line beyond 2023.

Feige had previously kept open the possibility of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier being a multiseason production, something that again came to light after Disney just entered WandaVision under the “Limited Series” category in this year’s Emmys, while the Captain America spinoff was submitted as a drama. Unlike WandaVision, which should immediately tie in with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sam and Bucky’s fate is wide open for new job offerings.

Marvel Studios certainly must have big plans for John “U.S. Agent” Walker, Sharon “Power Broker” Carter and Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, as well as Baron Zemo, so eventually anyone out of that bunch could run into Sam and Bucky again. However, considering how good the high-flying Mackie is, Marvel might just give him a smaller gig in one of its upcoming projects before Captain America 4 comes to fruition.
