In a virtual Comic-Con@Home panel featuring the cast and creators of FX's vampire mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows, co-star Matt Berry (who plays Laszlo) detailed his story of becoming starstruck in the presence of Mark Hamill. When Hamill guest starred in the season 2 episode "On The Run" as a rival/nemesis to Berry's Laszlo, the latter simply couldn't contain his excitement during production.

Thanks to certain obvious yet unavoidable circumstances, Comic-Con has taken on a new form here in 2020. Comic-Con@Home has featured virtual panels from various shows and films in lieu of the live and in-person spectacles that have been a mainstay at the convention for years. The What We Do in the Shadows panel, moderated by Haley Joel Osment, proved to be a lively affair.

A short way into the panel, the discussion shifted to Hamill's guest role. "I've never seen Matt [Berry] so giggly," said writer Stefani Robinson, referring to the cast and crew's reaction to Hamill's on-set antics. Specifically, Hamill had just picked up a pool cue and held it like, essentially, like a lightsaber. This was entirely improvised by him, and according to Executive Producer Paul Simms, the entire crew reacted in unison with an air of "oh my god."

Berry responded to being humorously called out by elaborating on his reaction, saying "well, you’ve got to understand what that was like. I was stood in front of Luke Skywalker, and he held something like that right in front of me." As if channeling the spirits of millions of Star Wars fans, he continued, "it doesn’t matter how cool you think you are or how in-character you are, you’re not. You’re seven years old with Luke Skywalker right in front of you.”

The panel itself was chock full of other memorable moments. Even starting right at the beginning, the introduction sequence featuring each cast member popping in their respective video chat window with charmingly awkward pauses and greetings would have felt right at home on the show itself. Amusingly, Kayvan Novak, whose character Nandor has been known to have issues with modern technology, continually popped in and out of the chat without warning. Perhaps a bit on the show could spawn from this very panel?

Comparably very little was discussed about the upcoming season of the show, as filming hasn't begun for obvious reasons. But the insight into already classic moments from the first two seasons may have been more than enough for fans tuning in. From Guillermo's (Harvey Guillen) vampire battling finale to Colin Robinson's (Mark Proksch) powerful promotion, a show with this many fond memories after only 2 seasons surely has plenty of places still to explore.

What We Do in the Shadows airs on FX, with season 3 confirmed but release still TBD.
