Nintendo DS owners don’t have many great new games to look forward to until after Nintendo releases the 3DS. The upcoming game Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem may be a huge exception. The Mario vs. Donkey Kong games are spiritual successors to the classic Donkey Kong games and have somewhat of a retro style.
As the name implies, Mario vs. Donkey Kong pits the two characters against each other in battles of wits and puzzle-solving. Mini-Land Mayhem continues to evolve the Lemmings like gameplay of manipulating objects and guiding Mini-Marios in order to solve puzzles.

The Mario vs. Donkey Kong franchise has had a healthy life on Nintendo handhelds, starting out on the Game Boy Advance and making its way to the DS and also DSiWare. Mini-Land Mayhem is the fourth game in the series and looks to improve upon the puzzle-based gameplay.
The first Mario vs. Donkey Kong is platformer with puzzle elements and has more in common with Donkey Kong. Then, in the series’ second outing, March of the Minis, Nintendo honed in on the puzzle-solving features and brought a new feel to the game. They also injected retro nostalgia into the series by bringing back Mario’s first love, Pauline, who hadn’t appeared in a video game in over a decade.
The third entry, Minis March Again was released for DSiWare and is likely the most satisfying Mario vs. Donkey Kong thus far. The game offers more of the same great gameplay and includes a robust level editor that is tons of fun to mess with.
Each Mario vs. Donkey Kong game has improved upon its predecessor and continues to bring new ideas to the table. Minis March Again was great, but is more of an expansion to March of the Minis than a true successor. The upcoming release looks to be the next big step in the franchise and is sure to have some creative new features. If you’re looking to get some use out of your DS or DSi before the 3DS comes along, Mini-Land Mayhem may be the way to go.
