Ubisoft revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, and some fans have a theory about the game’s villain Cursa. After examining one small section of the trailer, fans concluded that Cursa is secretly the cosmic princess Rosalina from 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is the upcoming sequel to 2017’s Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. A crossover between Ubisoft’s Raving Rabbids and Nintendo’s flagship Mario franchise, it takes the form of a unique blend of Nintendo aesthetics and turn-based-tactical gameplay reminiscent of modern XCOM. Announced at E3 2021, Sparks of Hope launches for the Nintendo Switch on October 20.

Ubisoft revealed the story trailer for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope on September 29. The trailer shows off some of the new characters, locations, and enemies that Mario, Princess Peach, Luigi, and the Rabbids will encounter as they battle to free the galaxy from Cursa’s grip. However, many fans noticed a scene near the end of the trailer where Cursa scooped up a trio of Rabbid Lumas to crush them in her colossal, starry hand.

However, she suddenly hesitates, momentarily releasing the Lumas from her grasp. Cursa’s eye turns from red to blue, and viewers can briefly make out part of her face beneath her spiral hood. It only lasts a few seconds before Cursa’s eye turns red, and she proceeds to drain energy from the captured Lumas. However, that brief glimpse was enough for some fans to conclude that Cursa was actually Rosalina, having either turned evil or been taken over by some sinister outside force. One user on Twitter suggested she might be possessed by something like the Megabug from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Blue eyes aren’t the only thing connecting Rosalina to the villain of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Both characters have a star on their chest, which Cursa uses to drain power from the Rabbid Lumas. Her galaxy-patterned arm and cloak also resemble Rosalina’s Cosmic Spirit form featured in Super Mario Galaxy 2. She can also change her size, growing to gigantic proportions at the end of the first Super Mario Galaxy.

However, the most significant link between Cursa and Rosalina is their connection to the Lumas. Rosalina is the Luma’s adopted mother in the Super Mario Galaxy games, so it makes sense that their suffering might be enough to break her free of Cursa’s influence temporarily. Of course, the big question is why Cursa needs the Lumas, but players will presumably find out when Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope releases next month.
