An anonymous source is claiming that Ubisoft is planning a price drop for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle prior to the game’s launch. The story comes from Nintendo Soup, reporting it has a verified source within Ubisoft who has provided documents showing the planned price drop from the currently listed $59.99 to $49.99. The pricing adjustment should come prior to launch so gamers who have placed pre-orders don’t have to worry about paying more or having to place a new order.

No justification is provided for Ubisoft’s rumored price for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle in the report. $59.99 remains the standard pricing for Nintendo Switch titles for both first-party and third-party games. That includes titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Disgaea 5 Complete, LEGO City Undercover and more. And there’s certainly no widespread price changes planned by Nintendo or others, as pre-orders for fall releases like Super Mario OdysseyPokken Tournament Dx, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are all still $59.99.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Price Change Rumor - Just Dance

Ubisoft’s only other new release to come out on Nintendo Switch is Just Dance 2017, which was also priced at $49.99 at launch. Ubisoft may very well simply view the $59.99 price point untenable in the current console market. There’s reason to be tentative, despite all of the excitement regarding the Nintendo Switch and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. There’s an extremely well documented history of third-party games struggling on Nintendo platforms going back several console generations now.

Other possibilities include Ubisoft simply believing that Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle deserves to be priced lower than other major Nintendo Switch games. Or perhaps the game isn’t of a similar scale for the price range, or Ubisoft ultimately didn’t invest as much into development as other games, though that seems unlikely given everything shown so far. Perhaps Ubisoft sees just how much potential the Mario + Rabbids brand has on Switch getting players invested will more than make up for the $10 difference.

Ubisoft being the publishing giant that it is, clearly the company knows exactly what it’s doing whatever the reason for pricing Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle at $49.99. And of course that price is not official yet and should be considered an absolute rumor until Ubisoft says otherwise. The pre-order price remains at $59.99 at retailers for now and appears to be a great game no matter the price.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is planned for release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch starting August 29.
