At E3 2017, Nintendo and Ubisoft surprised fans with the reveal of the XCOM-styled Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for the Nintendo Switch. In a crossover that seemingly made absolutely no sense to fans, its reveal was met with mixed reactions. However, years later, Mario + Rabbids is now regarded as a fan-favorite title on the Switch, with many clamoring for a sequel.

Earlier this year, fans began to speculate about a new entry, thanks to a slight change on the game's official Twitter account. For a brief period of time, the account's @RabbidsOfficial handle was changed to @MarioRabbids, seemingly hinting at a complete rebrand for the account and a possible new Mario + Rabbids game in the works. And while the handle has since changed back, an insider suggests that a sequel could be on the way.

Over on Twitter, video game insider and co-founder of XboxEra.com Shpeshal_Nick posted a tweet that clearly points to Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle 2. The tweet only consists of official art from the game with a "2" slapped on the image, leading many fans to believe that Shpeshal_Nick is hinting at an E3 reveal of a Mario + Rabbids sequel, especially given that E3 season is now underway.

In the replies to the cryptic tweet, the insider, along with many other devoted fans, expressed their love for the turn-based tactics game. For the time being, it seems unclear whether Shpeshal_Nick's tweet was meant as a hint or simply a way to express hope for the reveal of a sequel, but if something is in the works, it's possible that fans won't have to wait long to learn more. While Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a joint effort between Nintendo and Ubisoft, the original game was initially unveiled at Ubisoft's E3 presentation, days before Nintendo's. Should the companies follow a similar pattern, then a sequel reveal could come as early as this Saturday.

In October of 2018, Ubisoft sent out a survey asking fans how much they like certain Super Mario characters, such as the Koopalings, Kamek, Waluigi, Rosalina, and more. This led fans to believe that a new Ubisoft and Nintendo crossover game was certainly in the works, though over 2 years later, news has been largely radio-silent apart from supposed rumors and insider information.

Ubisoft's main show is set to kick off Saturday, June 12 at 12pm PT, while Nintendo's digital E3 presentation is set to premiere the following Tuesday, June 15 at 9 am PT. Last year's E3 convention was canceled as a result of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, so it goes without saying that fans are excited to learn anything about what could be in the works from both Ubisoft and Nintendo.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
