One of the many perks of being a video game character is the ability to avoid aging. While a few games like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End take a realistic approach to the subject of growing old, most properties keep their iconic protagonists youthful throughout every installment.

However, while this approach may be common for developers, some fans have an interest in seeing what their favorite characters would really look like. Realistic portraits have put believable spins on everything from the cast of Overwatch to Kirby, and website Compare The Market has continued this popular trend. Seeking advice from Ageing Researcher and Lancaster Professor Carol Holland, several aged-up video game characters were put on display, including a 53-year-old CJ from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The videos showcase several characters, taking their age at the time of their first video game appearance and adding on the years that have passed since its release. Two of the figures used are Mario and Luigi, with the former now 65 years of age and the latter 63. The pair of plumbers look fairly similar apart from their differing mustaches and color preferences, and the researchers used their physical fitness to determine their body type as senior citizens. As has always been the case, Luigi is a bit taller and slimmer than his adventurous brother, with Mario's stomach extending slightly further than the one on his younger relative.

Next up is Dr. Eggman, with Sonic the Hedgehog’s nemesis having made his first appearance at the age of 50. Already on the older side, factoring the years since that debut into his actual age would see the mech-loving antagonist being 80 years old. According to researchers, his “sedentary lifestyle” would see him showing age, losing weight and being far frailer than he once was. His signature red jacket and large gut still remains visible in the mock-up, though, while his classic mustache has been reworked into a beard that has become noticeably grayer.

Rounding out the list is Lara Croft, with the beloved adventurer now 46 years old. Though the researchers are kind to her, suggesting that she would take care of her skin prior to studying ancient locations, the archaeologist’s hair has lost its brown color. Her facial features have also smoothed, with wrinkles and thinner eyebrows seen on the model. Lara Croft does keep her classic hairstyle and outfit, though, and the researchers believe that her top-tier physical fitness would keep her body much like it has always looked in the Tomb Raider series.

While the next Tomb Raider game will be combining the past and present features of the franchise, players should not expect Lara Croft to be taking on this kind of aged look anytime soon. Still, these models are interesting, even if most players would prefer it if their favorite characters never got older.
