Gold Medalist Shaun White Meets Mario Kart in Olympic Crossover

There's no doubt that the Mario Kart franchise is one of the most popular and recognizable series on the face of the earth, especially when one considers the fact that it is the best selling racing game series in America. Proving the appeal of the titles, one fan of the Nintendo property takes assets from the video games to create a nearly seamless crossover clip involving the Olympic gold medalist Shaun White's recent performance at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

As seen below in the video from the YouTuber known simply as "Tater Tot", Shaun White's final half-pipe run at the Winter Olympics – which was virtually perfect and wound up clinching his victory – is given the Mario Kart treatment, complete with a racing countdown clock, and power-ups like coins, red mushrooms, and invincibility stars. Oddly enough, though, Mario Kart isn't the only Nintendo property referenced, as the top portion of the screen features a layover of the HUD from the original Super Mario Bros.

While Tater Tot's video involving Mario Kart and Shaun White's Olympic gold medal run is decidedly nifty, this is far from the first instance of the Nintendo racing title being used for crossover appeal. For instance, one Tampa Bay Lighting hockey game a couple of years ago afforded fans the opportunity to play Mario Kart in the arena during the actual event by utilizing the ice surface as a projection screen.

All things considered, with the Mario Kart franchise easily being one of the gaming world's most identifiable properties, it stands to reason that we will continue to see the game used for even more fun real-world crossovers in the future. This will surely be the case should Nintendo eventually decide to continue the series following the franchise's most recent entry of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is available now for Nintendo Switch.
