Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the most popular Nintendo Switch titles to date, selling incredibly well month after month. It has sold so well, in fact, that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe beats its own sales records annually each year that it has been on the market.

However, the content updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have effectively stopped and members of the Mario Kart community have had to find new ways to keep themselves engaged. Now, a new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe challenge has emerged, where players are tasked with hitting themselves with a blue shell in the fastest possible time.

The challenge itself, aptly named the "Blue Yourself" challenge, is not so different from a typical speedrun category. For those who may not know what a speedrun is, it's a challenge where gamers try to beat a game as fast as possible, most times including different categories for different types of runs. Events like Awesome Games Done Quick are great avenues for interested parties to jump into the world of speedrunning, with some GDQ events even hosting Mario Kart speedruns. To get back to the "Blue Yourself" challenge though, players have are currently experimenting with the fastest set ups to guarantee early Blue Shells to complete the challenge the fastest.

One speedrunner and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe content creator going by the name Skilloz seems to have set the current fastest record for the "Blue Yourself" challenge, hitting a time of just under 38 seconds. To achieve this goal, Skilloz reverses at the starting line of GBA Mario Circuit, a remake of a classic track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, in order to quickly grab a powerful item while in last place. Skilloz luckily gets a Power Star from the item box, holds onto it, then quickly catches up with the computer racers. He then gets a set of Triple Mushrooms, which is exactly what he needed to pull off the trick.

Skilloz then lets a couple of CPU racers pass him while using the star and gets his final item box which holds a Blue Shell. With all the set up complete, Skilloz passes the other races using the Triple Mushrooms, lands in 1st place, and throws the Blue Shell at himself in just 37.850 seconds. It's an incredibly impressive feat, especially when one considers how many random elements are at play from the CPU racers and the item boxes. Earning three different power items in Mario Kart requires racers to know exactly what place they need to be in during a race, which is why Skilloz had to slow down multiple times during the race.

All in all, the "Blue Yourself" challenge seems like a fun way for the Mario Kart community to test their own knowledge of the game against each other. Seeing as the only real content update Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has seen was a Mario Kart North American Open at the end of January, players are eager to see what's next. Until the next Mario Kart is announced, players looking for something new can follow the Mario Kart community's lead by creating their own fan-made challenges.
