After Mario Kart 8's debut on the Nintendo Switch earned the honor of being the fast-selling Mario Kart title of all time, perhaps it's no surprise that the game has continued to perform well around the globe. Today, it has been confirmed that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has topped the United Kingdom Sales Chart, pushing beyond the newly-released Prey to claim the top position.

The multitude of sales comes as no real shock, since the current Nintendo Switch lineup is somewhat devoid of other major releases. Once Nintendo's portable console launched, Nintendo sold more copies of Breath Of The Wild for the Nintendo Switch than it did actual Switch units - in other words, it was a clear-cut major release that stood out far above the other options. In the post-launch window, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has filled a similar role when compared to other releases on the platform.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Record Day One Sales

The Nintendo Switch edition of Mario Kart features several new characters and innovative new Battle Mode options, including some unique new games like Renegade Roundup, which plays out like cops and robbers. Since its launch in April, the game accumulated over a million sales in just 3 days, and has evidently continued to hold fast as a top-selling game across the pond.

Here's what the full Top 10 chart for UK-based sales looked like:

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  2. Prey
  3. GTA 5
  4. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  5. Lego Worlds
  6. Rocket League
  7. The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
  8. FIFA 17
  9. Horizon Zero Dawn
  10. Forza Horizon 3

Mario's latest race-based outing has plenty of long-term competition with the likes of Grand Theft Auto 5 and FIFA 17, which have consistently remained Top 10 contenders for months on end. It'll be interesting to see if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will hold onto its top spot next month, especially because it's one of the Nintendo Switch's best party games to date - and one we'd certainly pick over the slim competition that is 1-2-Switch.

It's worth noting that Chart-Track only takes a look at physical sales, so this isn't the full picture in how games in the United Kingdom are selling. An estimate by SteamSpy puts Prey at 100,000 digital sales, which in theory means it could have outsold Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for sales when measuring both mediums. In the physical realm, however, Kart is King.
