The grass is certainly getting greener when it comes to Mario Golf: Super Rush. The arcade-style golfing game featuring Mario and company is getting a free update, which is adding several new playable characters to the game, in addition to a few new golf courses. The best part? The new content is free, and is being rolled out today.
The announcement of the Mario Golf: Super Rush update comes as part of today's massive Nintendo Direct. The digital presentation by Nintendo saw several huge reveals, like the announcement of the Super Mario movie voice cast, a new Kirby game, and other new projects. The big N also revealed a major expansion to its Nintendo Switch Online service, adding games from the Nintendo 64 as well as Sega Genesis.
Announced via a 30-second trailer, Mario Golf: Super Rush will have a pair of new characters entering the fairway. The first character revealed is Koopa Troopa, who has been both friend and foe to Mario. Koopa Troopa's Special Shot is called Shell Skipper, which blasts away balls with each bounce. His Dizzy Dash move utilizes the shell, spinning and knocking anyone who comes in contact with it. The other golfer being added is Ninji, which is a bit more obscure of a Nintendo character. Ninji is fast and likes being airborne, reflected in its Hop Skipper Special Shot and Glide Dash move.
As far as new golf courses go, two more are being added as part of the latest update. Players will be able to play in Blustery Basin, a mountainous course prone to crosswinds and blizzards which should drastically affect how the ball rolls. The other new Mario Golf: Super Rush course is Spiky Palms. Spiky Palms is a desert course featuring serene sunsets as well as resident Spikes and "many other pointy things." The new batch of content differs a bit from the last Mario Golf: Super Rush update, which added just a single character and course in Toadette and New Donk City.
While the vast majority of Mario Golf: Super Rush updates have been welcomed by players, one recent update has proven to be controversial. The controversy stems from a change to one of Princess Daisy's voice lines, who has become a fan-favorite in the game. Before the last update, Daisy would say "Whatever!" when getting a bogey. The patch altered this line to simply booing, which many fans feel is bland and takes away from her personality. While the line of dialogue seems inconsequential either way, its odd that Nintendo decided to change it.
Mario Golf: Super Rush appears to be quite the success, with post-launch support bolstering its content offerings months after release. Now with Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Golf: Super Rush, the stage is potentially set for the return of Mario Strikers, something many diehard Nintendo fans have been waiting to see for years.
