Nintendo is aiming to start the summer season right with the upcoming release of Mario Golf: Super Rush. This new entry to the classic sport series looks to be elevating the game with colorful visuals and unique modes. But fans hoping to tee off locally with buddies may be disappointed with split-screen in Mario Golf: Super Rush.
Nintendo is no stranger to party titles, and many past games offered split-screen up to four players. Recent feature trailers for Mario Golf: Super Rush show the emphasis on multiplayer action as well. With head to head and Speed Golf modes, it seemed like split-screen would maintain this past trend.
However, newer updates to the title's main webpage suggests there will be some caveats. According to the game's main page in North America, only two players can participate in any multiplayer mode per console. However, even this description of local multiplayer for Mario Golf: Super Rush is somewhat misleading. From the Japanese page, Nintendo specifies that four players can join in on a sole console though it requires passing the Joy Cons.
Essentially this means that when it comes to the split-screen feature, only two players will be able to play simultaneously. So despite the game offering bigger groups for the multiplayer modes, those interested in split-screen specifically will have to settle for less. This means that the Speed Golf feature in Mario Golf: Super Rush, which has players teeing off at the same time, will be limited to two players on a single console.
No doubt this news will come as a let down for some players hoping to golf with friends or family. It does seem like somewhat of an oversight on Nintendo's part, especially since the Speed Golf mode has been featured so prominently in promotional material. Then again, it may not be that surprising given that other titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons limit one island per Switch.
Overall though, most fans will still be able to enjoy multiplayer online and locally even with the restrictions. Plus, there is always the chance that split-screen could be extended to four players in a post launch update. At this time, it is unknown whether the issue stems from a technical limitation or an artistic decision. If it has to do with the former, the potential Switch Pro tech could possibly alleviate that problem too. In any case, Mario Golf fans only need to wait a bit longer to hit the fairways with their friends.
