Margot Robbie had a lot of praise for The Suicide Squad when comparing it to past comic book films. The director of the film, James Gunn, who also worked on Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy series, has said that The Suicide Squad is neither a reboot nor a sequel to David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

The 2016 Suicide Squad introduced Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis' Amanda Wallers, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag to the DC Extended Universe, which is important to note as they will all be reprising their roles in the new film. Co-star David Dastmalchian (who plays The Polka-Dot Man) says Gunn's take on Harley Quinn will be one you've never seen before, which is saying a lot since Harley has quickly become a favorite character of many fans. Her portrayals across the games, animated shows, and films have always brought a cohesive yet unique take on the character.

Robbie went on to tell Access that, "Even if this movie wasn't as incredible as it is, it's still worth going to the theater just because it's so nice to be able to go to a movie theater again... But it just so happens that this is arguably one of the greatest, if not the greatest comic book film ever made. You don't want to miss it." Robbie is arguably an expert in comic book films, having previously portrayed Harley Quinn in the aforementioned film from Ayer and the underrated Birds of Prey. The latter placed Robbie's Harley Quinn in the spotlight as she joined forces with Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell's Black Canary, and Rosie Perez's Renee Montoya to protect Cassandra Cain from the crime lord Black Mask.

Gunn really wants to emphasize Harley Quinn as a unique individual character and he praised Paul Dini's original take on the character. During a press event for The Suicide Squad, Gunn said Quinn is a lively character with a colorful personality, noting that it was fun to bring all of that to life on the big screen. Gunn also stated that he believes Quinn belongs on the wall beside heroes like Spider-Man, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America.

Gunn's main goal for Harley Quinn is growth, specifically from the incredibly toxic relationship she had with Joker (who will reportedly not be in the film). In addition to the cast above, Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, Daniela Melchior, and Sylvester Stallone will all be making an appearance in The Suicide Squad when it releases next month.

Many fans were skeptical for another Suicide Squad property, but with James Gunn attached and being given carte blanche, hopes are high for fans. The trailer makes the movie look fun, brutal, and unfiltered, so this will hopefully be DC's answer to Marvel's Deadpool.

The Suicide Squad will be in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, 2021.
