Titanfall Install Size Xbox One

About a decade ago, gamers would be hard pressed to find one, let alone two, worthwhile games to play during the early months of the year. With many consumers still recovering from the holiday rush, financials were tight and any free time available was dedicated to the prior year's fall releases.

Since that time, however, a lot has changed. Now, the early months of the year, especially March, have proven to be equally as lucrative to developers and publishers, and as a result some of the biggest titles of the year oftentimes hit during that window.

With that in mind, we bring word of March's NPD numbers, which, while not as high as last year's in terms of software are still pretty strong. Not to mention, hardware sales were way up compared to last year as a result of the Xbox One and PS4 launches.

As Sony has already been kind enough to share, we know that the PS4 surpassed 7 million units sold last month, but there is no word on the Xbox One's numbers. We know that the Xbox One has sold much better than the Xbox 360 did during its first five months of release, but that's about it. Overall, software was up 78%, for a total of $395 million worth of sales during March.

On the software side, Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall led the pack for March, with strong sales numbers on both the PC and Xbox One. What's even more impressive, Titanfall hit the top spot without the help of the Titanfall Xbox One bundle, as pack-in games do not count towards NPD numbers.

The other major console exclusive of the month, inFAMOUS: Second Son, took the number 2 spot, an impressive feat considering the game released on March 21st. Not to mention, inFAMOUS: Second Son only had a single console version from which to pull its sales total.

South Park: The Stick of Truth, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Dark Souls 2 round out the top 5. While the Call of Duty franchise might be waning when sales are compared year-to-year, there's no denying the appeal is still there — enough for Ghosts to stake its claim right alongside two high profile March releases, in fact.

For the full list of March's top 10 games see below:

  1. Titanfall (Xbox One, PC)
  2. inFAMOUS: Second Son (PS4)
  3. South Park: The Stick of Truth (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
  4. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. Dark Souls 2 (PS3, Xbox 360)
  6. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  7. NBA 2K14 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (PS3, Vita)
  9. The LEGO Movie Videogame (3DS, PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  10. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition

While most will focus on the fact that Titanfall topped the software charts as Sony topped the hardware charts, the greater point is that we're in a new generation of consoles, both of which are finding success. Great games are starting to release for both consoles, and that is encouraging even more gamers to pick them up. And, it should only get more exciting as the year rolls on.

Which of the big March releases was your personal favorite? What game are you surprised to see on the NPD top 10?
