At The Game Awards last night, Magic: Legends, a brand new MMO ARPG based on Wizards of the Coast's highly-popular TCG Magic: The Gathering, was officially revealed through a brief cinematic trailer. While this Magic: Legends trailer was high on style, it was low on actual information about the forthcoming title, but further details on Magic: Legends's class system, combat, and co-op are now available for curious fans.

First up, Magic: Legends will ask players to select from five playable classes as they work to "save the multiverse from its greatest threat yet." These classes will presumably be manifestations of the five colors in MTG, but fans need not be overly-concerned with the Magic: Legends class that they initially chose, as it stated that they will be able to "switch between all five" as they play. While it remains to be seen how easily players will be able to swap classes, this is an interesting option that could have a major impact on gameplay.

With respect to the "real-time combat" in Magic: Legends, it is indicated that it will center around creating "spell hands." This will be done by collecting spells, upgrading them with fragments, and assigning them to a spell hand. Not every spell that a player obtains can be part of a spell hand simultaneously, though, and fans will need to choose their spells carefully when approaching encounters, as they will be "drawn at random" throughout combat.

Finally, more details on the cooperative aspect of Magic: Legends have been confirmed, and it is now known that parties of up to three players will be supported. While this is a relatively small when compared to other MMO parties, such as those found in World of Warcraft, it is in line with how co-op is handled in several popular looter games, and many fans will simply be happy to have the option to join up with friends as they play.

Of course, all of this is just the beginning of the details that fans can expect to receive about Magic: Legends, and a forthcoming beta will be an excellent opportunity for players to really learn what the game has to offer. While a start date for the Magic: Legends beta is not currently known, interested players can signup on the game's official website, and hopefully more details will be available soon.

Magic: Legends is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
